Fuck off, you stupid douche. He was the first coach to win 100 games in both college and the NFL and he did it with doormat teams. SD State, Cardinals and Chargers were all trainwrecks before he got there and collapsed back into mediocrity as soon as he left.

He was also one of the most innovative coaches in NFL history. The modern NFL passing game is Don Coryell's legacy. John Madden, Joe Gibbs, Ernie Zampese and Jim Hannifan were all Coryell assistants.

He came into the game right at as the rules were being modified to enhance the passing game.

Props to him for doing a really good job and maximizing things with the passing game.
But there was an overall spike in passing numbers around that time and if Coryell hadn't been seen as the "leading edge" of the wave, someone else would have been, what with the rules and game becoming more pass-friendly.

He's in the same breath as a guy like Bum Phillips, who, like Coryell, took over a floundering franchise and got them very competetive.

Phillips isn't a Hall of Famer and neither is your guy.

He was a good coach, a fun coach, a coach of note, but that's as far as it goes.

The fact is the NFL was opening things up (by rule changes) for the passing game right as Coryell came in.

He started in the NFL in 1973.

1974
- Kickoffs were moved from the 40 to the 35 yd line - giving teams better field position and more freedom not to begin in an offensive shell.
- Roll-blocking and cutting of wide receivers was eliminated; the extent of downfield contact a defender could have with an eligible receiver was restricted; the penalties for offensive holding, illegal use of the hands, and tripping were reduced from 15 to 10 yards.

1977
- Defenders were permitted to make contact with eligible receivers only once.

1978
- Rules changes permitted a defender to maintain contact with a receiver within five yards of the line of scrimmage, but restricted contact beyond that point. The pass-blocking rule was interpreted to permit the extending of arms and open hands.
