Motor City Madman lives up to nickname at fair
By Laurie Williams, Herald staff writer

He rankled family fairgoers who could hear him dropping repeated F-bombs and other coarse words over the loudspeaker throughout the fairgrounds.

Known for his hard rocking and big mouth, the Motor City Madman didn't disappoint his fans. But dozens of others have been calling and e-mailing fair organizers and commenting on the Herald's website, upset about his rowdy language.

The first letter to the editor complaining about the show came in at 9:12 p.m. Thursday -- while Nugent still was on stage.

"Nugent needs his mouth washed out with soap -- that green pine stuff my mother used -- and the fair board needs to tune up its entertainment practices," said another letter writer, Kirk Williamson of Kennewick.

Jennifer L. Mangum commented Friday on the Herald's Facebook page: "What rock did they find Ted Nugent under. I am very angry at (the) choice of words used during his concert. ... Were they so desperate to have Ted that they couldn't put a few rules in place and remember their own Mission Statement."

Fair Manager Lori Lancaster said Friday, "He went way beyond what was appropriate. ... We are not happy about it."

She said fair officials checked on his performances at other fairs and were told there were no problems.

Still, as a precaution they printed on the reserve-seat tickets: "Caution: adult language."

But The Nuge's voice boomed far beyond the 730 sold-out concert seats.

This isn't the first time fair officials have gotten complaints about an edgy performance by a big-name entertainer at the family-oriented venue.

LaToya Jackson's antics on-stage in 1991 also brought a flood of complaints for being too risque.

At the time, the Herald quoted Dick Moore, a fair board member and entertainment chairman, as saying the mix of acts proved successful at attracting people, but he suggested in the future the acts should probably be less diverse.

"I don't think the Tri-Cities is ready for LaToya Jackson," he said. "I personally don't think it was a good family show."

This week wasn't the first time Terrible Ted gave the Tri-Cities a wild performance. In 1986 he played a deafening concert at the fairgrounds during Water Follies.

Herald columnist Bob Woehler wrote then: "The only intelligible words seemed to be four-letter ones, which he could enunciate perfectly.

"I'm no music critic, but I would give him an 'A' for intensity and loudness ... and an 'F' for lyrics."

On Friday, Lancaster said the fair board will be talking about the issue at its next meeting.

I'm surprised there's even 730 people who give a shit about Ted Nugent.

After all these years, he's still playing sold out shows.

I wonder why they would consider a washed up fourth rate has-been to be a "big name entertainer"?

It was at our county fair. The 730 "seats" are in the fenced off area close to the stage and cost more then general admission . $12 admission gets you into the fair and close enough to watch Ted and/or hear him. And no matter where your at in the fairgrounds, or a 1/4 mile outside the fairgrounds, you can hear the featured peformer.

So when your over rideing the ferris wheel, you hear Ted sayiong fuck. When your checking out the 4-h clubs sheep, steers and hogs, you hear fuck from Ted.

Probably 25,000 people went to the fair that day and maybe 15,000 of them could hear the concert.

Same thing when Gallagher did our fair a couple of weeks ago..he ran fat smack, he ran Mexican smack, he ran retard smack, and he dropped f bombs. Same situation as the Kenniwick fair..you are going to hear it all over the place...

You are going to get what you get with this type of entertainment..and the fair boards act shocked and will investigate...Ted Nugent drops F bombs, but I like Ted as he is a true American patriot who is tired of all the PC shit that goes on.

Hell ...Gallagher only got $ 5,000 for the show anyway.

I saw ZZ Top at the Oregon State Fair Friday night, no F bombs, just good hard rock from the little old band from Texas. Sold out show, with another 1500 or so on the outside listening.

you want nice wholesome family entertainment and you bring your kids to what has to be the largest white trash magnet on the face of the earth, a big ass carnival?

Brilliant!!!!!

if this place is anything like the big E (new england's "state" fair) or any of the larger local fairs that are big enough to pull in an act like the nuge, the potty mouth of the act is the last thing you gotta worry about. i'd be a little more worried about how much heroin was in the system of the dude that set up the scrambler before your kids climbed on it.

oh, and tramp. it's you're, not your. i usually let this shit slide, but when you fukk it up 12 times in a post, i gotta call it.

Leave it to the east coast to fuck up something as wholesome as a county fair.

I hear the judging in the Amish incest categories is fairly intense. Not everybody gets a blue ribbon, you know.

As for the goat-fucking, there’s a reason they call it “animal husbandry”.

I'm suprised they managed to get an act higher up the food chain than an Elvis impersonator to come to Tri Cities.

We had none other then Rick f**cking Springfield and the Beach Boys also. Solid eh? I asked my neighbor whos on the fair board why there werent more country acts, and he said country acts just dont draw the crowds like old rock and rollers. He said this whilst wearing a cowboy hat and in a most disgusted way.

Do old rockers really draw any better, or do they draw better then the country acts that can't sniff the Indian casino circuit?

Dude, where Tramp lives, a Duelling Banjoes contest would draw a massive crowd.

For the undercard, they could have a belt-buckle shining contest, followed by a watermelon spitting contest.

Not sure Ted qualifies as being higher up the food chain.

Oh, SNAP!

I obviously meant "watermelon seed spitting"... but if you've ever been to Tri Cities, whole watermelons aren't out of the question.

I would peg Derron to win the watermelon spitting contest. He wouldn't even have to use his mouth.

No, you didn't see, you don't see... you don't see how much you suck at this. So much so that Derron allowed you to KYOA... because you just didn't know when it was a good time to STFU.

But congrats on putting a period after Kansas City. That took mad skill.
