So I'm working on a list of the most annoying marching band songs for the New Times music blog (because, frankly, any type of Top 10 list seems to generate a lot of hits). I've come up with most of the obvious ones, but I was hoping you guys could help jog my memory. I'd like to get at least 9 or 10 solid candidates. I'll definitely give a shout-out to T1B in the blog post if you guys can help me come up with a few more. They don't need to be the official school fight song, just any annoying song the marching band plays frequently. Here's what I have so far in no particular order:
FSU war chant
USC's "Tribute to Troy"
Boomer Sooner
Rocky Top
That Gary Glitter "Hey!" song that multiple schools use (including CU)
Notre Dame Victory March (I'm kind of torn on this one, It's actually a pretty great fight song, but everyone hates ND)

They should probably think about renaming that song.
Mine, for USC:
This, is the only song, we know
And it's boring, And it's slow

I think you're talking about "Fight On".
Any PAC10 fan of any school other than USC would love to see this song shoved down the throat of every band member and player.
It's not that it's such an obnoxious song, but they play it constantly. It seems like not just every score including PATs, but every first down, every pause between plays.

I actually think "Fight On" is a classic fight song (same goes for "Hail to the Victors" - sorry Screw). "Tribute to Troy" is the one Killian is talking about. It's annoying as shit. I think even most SC fans would concede that...

I've been perusing this site for the past hour or so - http://fightmusic.com/index.html. Great archive of damn near every marching band song you could think of. I forgot about the super-lame "Go Gators" chant. That's gotta be on the list. I also never realized Bama had a version of the Gary Glitter song that specifically calls out Tennessee. That's pretty lame.

This would probably not make too many lists (except for Sam's) just because it's not the most popular, but I think Auburn has the most annoying fight song out there. Just seems as if the band is playing completely impromptu and making up the beat as they go. Sounds like a little kid pounding his toys on the ground. Anyways, sorry Papa & carson.

I muted part of the South Carolina-Auburn game last Saturday for this very reason. It was awful. Worse than Troy, worse than "Go Gators," even worse than the clownish lion's roar sound effect at Beaver Stadium (although i don't know if they still do that).
Virginia Tech has an irritating drumline when their offense is in the red zone that concludes with the crowd chanting, "stick it in, stick it in, stick it in." But since VT scores an offensive TD about once a month, the annoyance is minimal.

I gotta admit, I actually like the repetitive tunes that USC, UCLA, Illinois and FSU play during games. Just kind of a traditional thing for me, comforts me that some things haven't changed over the years, let alone after each down.
Cal's version of Son's of Westwood is pretty bad, however, they should kill that immediately.
Other questionable fight songs:
-Minnesota Rouser (very bland)
-Penn State's Victory (funeral procession would be more suitable)
-Washington's Bow Down (Nyquil equivalent)
-Georgia's Dixieland garbage (Civil War's over)
The Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band's "Come Join the Band" has always been pretty stirring to me. Probably because when I was a little kid we would watch them march right by us going from the athletic department to the stadium before each game. The band seemed so big and loud when we were right up next to where they marched by.
When I was in HS they were pretty much the first college marching band to start including "non-traditional" (i.e. rock 'n roll) songs in there repertoire. They incorporated "All Right Now" back in the early 70s when it was still a pretty new song and it became their main fight song. A lot of bands play that song now but it was very very cool back then. A great vehicle to highlight the percussion section. Another song they played a lot back then was the Dead's "Uncle John's Band". It actually sounds really good played by a marching band.

My high school used NW's fight song, so I'm kind of partial to that.

USCs band plays several songs during games
Fight On is played after USC makes a first down or scores a TD
Conquest is played after every USC score and Victory
Tribute to Troy is played after defensive stops
Fanfare is the intro to Tribute to Troy and is played when the band enters the stadium or goes on to the field
All Right Now is played after USC gets a turnover
Another One Bites the Dust after USC gets a sack
William Tell at the start of the fourth quarter
Emperors Theme when USC is flagged for a penalty
Tusk or as my sons thought the song was called "U-C-L-A- SUCKS"
This video from the pregame in front of Herritage hall before a USC home game has the SO Cal spellout followed by Tribute to Troy and Fight On http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChcZaQ_PI-g
Conquest after beating the Bruins http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5UABj3jZSs

I dont mind the song, what bothers me is the mindless victory sign that just strikes me as a hitler youth ralley. I love the song, seeing and hearing it in person makes the hairs stand up and the adrenaline flow. If other teams fans dont like it, have your team move the ball.

I've seen two Iowa-Tennessee games over the years and really like the Volunteer band playing Rocky Top the first 50 times....but it became annoying the next 150 times during the first half.
The Iowa band plays In Heaven There Is No Beer after every Hawkeye win....and it's one of my favorites. On Wisconsin and The Notre Dame Victory March are two of my favorite fight songs, and you can hear them at a lot of high school games on Friday nights.

I like how you conveniently left out the part that describes "Tribute to Troy" as "the incessant stanza of pounding drums and blaring horns." Heh.
they must have copied it from the USC site. I disnt know what all the songs are called, Im not a band geek. I like the TMB but not so much that I know what all their songs are called.
I have never heard USC play Tribute to Troy after the opposing team gets a first down

point is they play it all the fucking time. doesn't matter what the other team does, so save that dumbfuck "if they don't like it they should score more" shit you wankers pull out all the time no matter how unreasonable (ie. pumping your kids full of horse 'roids then running the score up on a team who doesn't).

They play the song when USC is on defense and the other team gets 3 or fewer yards on the play, if it seems like you're hearing it a lot when your team plays USC, it means you aren't moving the ball

could be: michigan doesn't have an impressive record against sc. or it could be the logistics of football. i've never charted a game, but i'm pretty sure nearly half of any team's plays throughout the course of a season go for three or less.
we actually hear the song so much because of sc's dumbfuck "we are troy" circle jerk mentality, as if the rest of the world also thinks you're as special as you guys pretend you are. in the end you're just suckers for dropping 35k/year on the same education you could get at ucla while your football team is no longer dominant now that ncaa finally told you to stop cheating.

35k/year? Maybe 30 years ago. My daughter got offered a 20k/year academic scholarship to SC 4 years ago. That would have brought the cost down to about 35k.
She didn't take it.

Ya musta first heard it at the 1990 Hall of Fame Bowl in Tampa.
Auburn's fight song used to have a better flow to it; AU band was military like AtM's until the sixties when commie libs changed it to a "show" band. That's when they went to the choppy version.
BTW the "Go Bucs" song is suxx and gaxx. So is Hang On Sloopy.

UW’s marching band is pretty well regarded, and I like On Wisconsin, You’ve Said It All, Varsisity, and they also play Roll Out The Barrel. But I would have to say that my all-time favorite would be Le Regiment de Sambre et Meuse played by tOSU marching band when they do the script Ohio. I saw it done once when I was about 15 years old. I’m planning to get tickets for the Badger game there 10/29/2011 to see it again. Hair on the back of your neck kind of thing.

Hard to disagree with you here Goobs :D . I'm obviously a little biased, but Le Regiment is probably my favorite college band tune out of all of them. Back in the late 90s / early 00s (approximately), they started playing snippets of it during the game typically after a good defensive play, which is a nice compliment to Fight The Team.
Hang On Sloopy is a staple song for OSU, but I'll admit it's like background noise for me at this point. And I hate when our band plays the generic shit like the "Hey" song. I would much prefer something more relevant like I Wanna Go Back.

The script Ohio is probably the coolest thing I've seen performed by a marching band.....and the Wisconsin band playing the Budweiser song (You've Said It All) is one of the most fun. Wisconsin fans definitely know how to have fun at a football game.

Nice article, btw. Maybe the shoutout will get 10 or so new blood in here to double our member list.

Had I logged in sooner I would have suggested Michigan State's "Eat 'em up" cheer. It is so annoying and reminds me of every high school marching band I've ever listened to.

I can remember back in the days when ABC used to broadcast SWC games, and they used to show the bands playing at half-time.
Now, I'm not much on any of the schools that play ball south of the Red, but it was hard to shake the Aggie War Hymn once the aTm band got spooled up. Still one of the best under-rated fight songs in all of BTPCB.

I loves me some marching bands. It's an integral part of the CFB experience, especially when you're in the stadium.
That said, if I hear one more band play Louie Louie (even Oregon, who has something of a "claim" to it), I'm going postal on some motherfuckers.
