Do you live in a ghetto?

How "white" is your neighborhood? What is the degree of Schvoogie-fication?

Mexicans?

Upper Messicans?

Lower Messicans? ( <---- I made that one up...unless you count Hondurans as "Lower Messicans" )

Is yours a gated community, bereft of vitality and "colour"? Is it even possible to "keep it rill" in a deed restricted enclave?

Are bake sale signs the closest thing you see to graffiti on your block?

Personally, I live amongst the real people and we have respect for one another.
It's all good in tha 'hood.

I live in no man's land. A main intersection that's a dividing point between boystown, gangsta shoot-em-up projects, concrete towers full of Muslims and the gentry.

It translates into tasteful antique shops, decent Shawarma, good Jerk Chicken and Victorian houses without curtains so everyone can look through the window and see how much it cost to have the place is decorated.

I'd say SW DC is 65% black, 35% everyone else. There are three housing projects in SW, but most of the "bad" stuff (i.e. shootings) happens more to the SE part of SW near South Capitol and the Anacostia. The NW and west part of the hood is a bit more whiter, nicer rowhouses and a bunch of high rises over there. They are starting a 10-year redevelopment plan of the Washington Channel-front of the neighborhood, so this once neglected hood is starting to turn around.

I heard SW at least 10 years ago was a hood cabbies refused to drive into. It's not like, say, Lincoln Park in Chicago, but it is a good place to be. Rents are more affordable, SW is very convenient to the core of the District and Arlington County. I personally like being one mile away from Nats Park. 10 minute Metro ride to Gallery Place (where the Verizon Center is) and the bars along Penn Ave on the Hill.

Lotta people won't consider SW but it has a great bang for its buck. Plus we have the only open air waterfront bar in the District.

A ghetto??

I live in Iowa. What's "Schvoogie-fication"?

"Is this heaven? No, it's Iowa."

I'm not looking up the demographics but I would guess that our community is approximately 95% white with the other 5% to include a little bit of all the minorities you mentioned.

No hood here..rural residential..neighbors at least 200 yards away all directions. Enough space to have my shooting range, airstrip, burning piles, my parts vehicles behind my barn, duck hunting, coyote hunting, sniping the neighbors feral cats out my office window ...1Messican family down the road...pretty decent..

Local school district is 49% Hispanic..thanks to Oregon's free for all on drivers license up until about 2 years ago..just show them a fuckin utility bill, or an envelop with a return address on it and that was good enough to get a DL, and everything else is easy from there.

Can't say I've ever seen anyone cross violent, neo-conservative ideology with a pick-up line before.

Thanks for the imagery, Mr. McQueen.

Iraqui refugees. Is that a mudshark? I honestly don't know.

A disability can be something as little as ADD. Pretty rampant diagnosis these days.

I bet you have more minorities in your town than I do in my neighborhood (which is probably twice the size of your entire town). We have exactly ZERO non-white folk living within at least 3 blocks, and that's probably 20 households or so (estimating).

Even worse is I spent my first 4-5 years out of college working for Principal Financial Group downtown and if I had a nickel for every minority I saw in the building during that entire period, I would probably have about 20 cents in my pocket. There's thousands of employees of Principal in downtown Des Moines. That's quite pathetic. 3 blocks away from all of the Principal buildings is an entire area of black people. The whole 3-4 mile radius is mostly blacks. Principal can't hire ANY of them??? I'm not calling them racist, but I found it to be rather odd.

Not really. Just the smart thing to do.

Much like anywhere other than a fast food joint, they wouldn't hire you either so I wouldn't act all high and mighty.

not an official census of ellington, just my best SWAG.

62% Holsteins
33% Honkeys
2% Indian/Paki/miscellaneous middle eastern goat fukkers
1% Gooks
1% Spics
1% 'groes

As a kid I grew up in an area that was 98% black/spic, 0% holstein.

I prefer Holstein majorities by far.

There's a whole lotta whitey in my hood. As in, about 96-97%.

Of the minorities, about a similar percentage of them are black. Not a whole lotta Messicans around here at all. Like I've said, around here Hispanic means Puerto Rican, not Messican. And there aren't a whole lotta Puerto Ricans around here either.

And btw, the proper derogatory term for those slightly to the north of me is Canucks, not upper Messicans. You should know that, Marty.

My immediate surroundings are mostly white, working class (next door neighbors are Mexican). The house backs up to a business hiway, with all order of no good riffraff going on. A couple of blocks either way is the barrio. Pretty heavy Asian population.

I spend a large chunk of my time at the OL's house... which is in the ghetto. Gentrification has done wonders for what was the worse neighborhood in Portland. Not too bad -- I'll walk down to the store late at night, which I wouldn't have done there 10-15 years ago (not a chance). Occasionally the bullets still fly around, and Portland is currently going through the next round of gang warfare, but the whole neighborhood is all "red guys," so things stay fairly calm most of the time. Still duck-and-run for cover when the hoopdie with the bad muffler makes its second slow trip around the block, but it's not too frequent.

But it's Portland -- the worst of the bad neighborhoods aren't all that bad. The ghettos are shifting from the North and close-in Northeast parts of town, to deep Southeast... which has become fairly rough. And just about any neighborhood in the entire metro area that's adjacent to the light rail commuter train has gone to hell. But all in all, pretty darn calm for a city its size -- just don't go wandering around Old Town late at night, and it's not bad.

I don't think I have ever noticed a black, mexican in the neighborhood other than the guy who owns the mobile detail and landscapers. We have a larger amount of Jehovah's Witnesses in my gated community than the rest of the county, I would assume. I've never understood why but it's fucking annoying. There are also two Euro families that live here part of the year and both of the husbands play possessional hockey in Sweden or some shit. It's better than having to deal with Brittney Spears dumb ass in the next neighborhood over I suppose; I've heard some horror stories.

That's all I got...

We do have a very tan dude who is a lowly engineer living across the street from our development, but I would not call that a ghetto.

What's a "lowly engineer"?

Designs basements?

Works in the bilges?

Do they offer a degree for this at AtM?

Exactly.

My house faces a short hill where houses that WERE going for upwards of a million that were built at roughly the same time as mine. But that little hill is the border of Rodeo and Hercules, which appearantly made a big difference when my house was being appraised. Other than new Hercules (& that's a stretch) the good property values in the East Bay are southbound on 680.

Like I said. My house is tops in my area. Most of the houses in my hood would qualify as "rustic" at best.

Still one of the most desirable communities in the area. There are no homes for sale in my section which has houses built in 1987. Not really a gated community, but with limited access and patrolled by Lee County Sheriffs. Residents are a nice mix of young couples with small kids and old farts like me. MrsO loves Halloween where she gets to give out treats to 50 or 60 youngsters. Life is good here.
