Subbing again today

I've been keeping busy as a substitute teacher so far this school year and am heading out to teach a high school math class today for the same teacher I subbed for last year. Surprising since last year I wrote my name with a dry erase marker on the smart board in her room. Hell, how's an old fart like me supposed to recognize the difference between a white board and a smart board when, in my day, all of the boards were black? We got it erased with a little work, but I'll find out today if my miscue left any permanent marks on the board. Subs must be really hard to find these days.

Mace, this may be covering old ground, but what are they paying you a day for minimum security prison work in Iowa these days? When I retired in 1994, the going rate was $60 in our CNY district. The administration wanted me to sub, but I refused. They even offered me $100 a day and I said no. When I left the classroom, I left. Hope you're having fun.

I know, he has to stay sober the WHOLE DAY. I'll bet your mind can't even grasp that concept, much less execute it.

To answer your question, BigO, it pays $90-$95 a day, depending on the school district. I sub at 5 different school districts with the two largest schools of the five giving me the bulk of the days. I'm averaging about three days a week, which is about what I want/need to work to supplement my retirement. There are a few larger schools in the area that pay $100-$105 a day but I haven't applied at them.

Trev, it doesn't take bravery, just a lot of patience. I had a few issues last year (my first) dealing with a couple of smart asses who thought they were tough guys, but I apparently got the message across to the little bastards that I wasn't going to take any shit, because they haven't even tried testing me this year..so far. It's a pretty easy gig, even if it's only for $95 a day. I show up at school a little before 8:00, school starts around 8:15, and I'm headed home by 3:20. No lesson plans, no papers to check, and no in-service meetings. Beats the hell out of meeting with parolees for 9-10 hours a day. Plus, if I don't want to work, or have something else to do, I just turn them down that day. I turned down a date for Nov 19 because I'm going to the high school state football finals, so I enjoy the flexibility, and there's enough demand for subs that I don't have to worry about not getting called. It's actually kind of fun working with most of the kids and a great way for me to make a little money during the winter months.

Cuda: So far, I've kept my hands to myself but there's been a couple of times when I've thought to myself that the teachers I had in school would have slapped the bastards upside the head.

I am going to guess here Mace that considering that the comment came from one of the resident pedophiles, it had more to do with potential ass grabbing on some underage high school girl than it did about bitch slapping the insolent little bastards when they mouth off.

Just sayin..

I considered that possibility, Derron, but I gave him the benefit of the doubt.

Shut up you liberal sack of shit. When your son gets older, and you really see what goes on in education, you're going to be wishing for the banning of pot and granting of school choice.

This is a thread about substitute school teaching, Trev, and that kind of language will not be tolerated. You've earned yourself a detention, young lady.

There is school choice you ignorant twat. You can send your kid to any school district you want. You are also free to send your kid to any number of private schools provided you can afford them. You can even home school your kids. And pot wouldn't be any more legal for kids to guy than it is now had Prop 19 passed. But by all means, keep making yourself look more ridiculous.
