one of the first LP's i bought with my own money. with the paper bag cover promo, and water wash album sleeve which seems lame as hell for Led Zep in retrospect. but, cool when you are 7 or 8 years old. old timers remember what i'm talking about.
Fool in the Rain (bonzo's off beat drumming is pretty cool)
riff/opening from in the evening is classic
all of my love, FM staple i guess
John Paul Jones casooularaumba thing.
i'm gonna crawl, slow blues.
?
yes or no?
mixed on this LP. not vintage Zep but what does LZ look like in the disco era? i liked that Page/Black Crowes live CD set at the Greek. that was pretty cool.

HELL YES!
Great fucking album. Its a pity Bonzo couldn't have kept his vodka consumption under 2 liters that night. JPJ was just starting to emerge as a writing and producing force within Zeppelin during that album. Even if it was because Page was a total fucking junkie, I would have loved to see a few more Zeppelin albums wherein Jones was able to flex his creative muscle.

I was just never a big fan of it. I can't articulate it as well as you old-skool, older LZ fans, but I never really cared for it. That is it.

Love it.
A little "slick" on the production side by LZ standards, but great flow throughout.
Fool In The Rain and In The Evening are classic "pounding the air-drums" tunes. Or beating on the steering wheel down the road.

Probably my least favorite Zeppelin album but it doesn't make it a bad album. I didn't mind when The Who went to the synthesized sound...not so much with Zeppelin. I'm with Dins on 'In The Evening'...love that song...and it's hard to not tap your foot to 'Hot Dog'.
Sudden Sam wrote:Least dated? Is there anything on II that doesn't hold up? The best "no filler material" album I can think of. Not a weak song on it.
I didn't say II was a bad album. It's the album I'd most likely throw on.
It just sounds "of it's time", and that's not always a good thing.
ITTOD is far more dynamic. Instead of stealing songs, Page and Plant actually grow.

I remember when it was first released and how geeked I was to go buy it... and how disappointed I was with it at first. It's sorta' grown on me over the years but IMO it's their weakest effort.
I was 18 at the time and a Zep freak since I first got my hands on IV and then Physical Grafitti in 1975.

The next time I hear a decent bootleg Zeppelin performance will be the first.
They were shit live. Fucking sloppy playing and I don't mean just "loose", but not in time...disjointed.
Page never re-created his studio chops in concert.

For anyone lucky enough to have seen Zep live... well, if God and GOD were to perform a reading of the Bible live, nobody would much care if HE missed a thee, thou, or thon't during the recital, now would they?

Obviously you've never listened to The Complete BBC Radio Sessions 1969-1971: Empress Valley CD release. It is a collection of the raw pre-broadcast BBC master tapes. No studio overdubs, just Page, Plant, Jones and Bohnam and a studio audience.
Other high points in Zeppelin's bootleg archive include, but are not limited to...
1973-01-22 - Southampton University
1975-05-25 - London, England - Earl's Court
1977-06-21 - Los Angeles, CA - LA Forum (the Listen to This Eddie audience recording)
1973-05-18 - Dallas, TX
1970-03-21 - Vancouver, BC
1977-04-27 - Cleveland, OH - The Maximum Destroyer
Start with those. They are all excellent examples of Zeppelin rocking out sans studio overdubs. And the envelope is only being pushed further out as collectors undertake their own restoration projects. There are so many soundboards out there that suffer because of tape speed issues. And the possibilities for providing a better live ambiance by creating matrices of soundboard and audience recordings is nearly endless.
Edit: I should also include the 1970-01-09 - Royal Albert Hall show as well. It was featured on the DVD in an enhanced form. But the raw boots that were circulating before the DVD was ever released are still fucking killer.

Then I am absolutely mystified by your appraisal of Zep's live game. Have you ever actually listened to the CDs?
