Pretty good list Scott, I'd exchange Haley for Dent who basically disappeared 2-3 years after the Super Bowl Shuffle. Haley was a beast for a decade.

I like Terrel Davis over Roger Craig too. Craig was good but not great IMO, even though he ran & received for 1000 yds in a season, both were the products of good teams, but I think TD was the better runner.

The other guy I think should be added to your list is TE Shannon Sharpe.

Hard to narrow that list down to 5, but I'm a firm believer that Ray Guy deserves to be in the HoF.

His average per kick would not even be competitive today but he was the first "modern" punter and had a major influence on how the game is played today.

Jerry Rice for sure. Best player ever, IMO, or at least my personal favorite. I don't think anybody in their right mind would leave him out of the top 5 all time.

He's a Super Bowl champ who was the face of one of the preeminent franchises in the NFL for 10 years. And he had more pro bowls and more all pro selections than Martin.

And if I really wanted to be a homer, I would have included Demontti Dawson, but I couldn't justify putting him in the top 6 in this class.

C. Martin would be more deserving than Bettis.

Martin gained more yds, had more 1,000 yd seasons, scored more TDs, had a higher yds-per-carry average, had a higher yds-per-game average, had more receptions, had more receiving yds, and fumbled fewer times.

He gained 1,000 yds in 10 consecutive seasons and played his career for overall worse teams than Bettis did.

One can really make no rational arguement for Bettis over Martin to go into the Hall.

Martin only played on 3 losing teams in his entire career. His QBs were Drew Bledsoe, Chad Pennington and Vinnie Testaverde to name a few. Bettis did the majority of his work with Kordell Stewart under center. So shut the fuck up about Martin playing on a crappy team. Bettis damn near single-handedly kept the Steelers offense relevant and contending for titles while the worst QB since Mark Malone repeatedly pissed down his leg every Sunday. EVERY team that played the Steelers was stuffing 8 in the box to try to stop Bettis. And he STILL got his. And the Steelers still WON.

And then, when the grind of being hit 30 times a game started to wear him down, Bettis was able to transition into the most effective short yardage and goal line back this side of Marcus Allen. Maybe you remember Bettis' box line from the 2004 tilt against the Raiders? 5 carries, 3 yards and 3 TDs. But yea, his yards per carry were too low.

Your argument is that Bettis was on more successful teams than Martin and therefore Martin is more worthy presupposes that neither player had an impact on that final record. Which is flat out weapons grade stupid. Bettis was the focal point of the Steelers offense. Plan B was Kordell Freaking STEWART. And yet the Steelers somehow managed to go to two conference championship games, largely because Bettis was such a god damned stud.

Make no mistake that Martin is a worthy HoFer. Just not this year.

Not nearly as true as you wish it were. For starters, Bettis played the first 3 years of his career with a Ram franchise that was so dysfunctional that they moved to St. Louis in 1995. During that period, Bettis played with a defense who's average rank was 17.3 league-wide. That Rams team had no passing attack to speak of and an overall offensive ranking of 23rd. All Bettis did during those 3 years was to go to 2 Pro Bowls. Then during his 3rd year, after the franchise had moved to St. Loser, his new coach, the soon to be fired Rich Brooks, came to the conclusion that Bettis was washed up.

Bettis was traded to the Steelers just in time to play with the Steelers and their vaunted defense. Except that that defense was a lot more hit and miss than you would think. Only 3 times were the Steelers in the top 5 in scoring defense. And 4 times they were out of the top 10 completely in scoring defense. Yet Bettis still found ways to grind out yardage despite the fact that Cowher made almost no effort to disguise the Steelers run first tendencies.

Maybe that's why Bettis has more Pro Bowl and All Pro selections than Martin?
