Hello Sooner friends

Once again IU has headed down to Norman to fill a coaching vacancy. Last time we did you a favor and took some trash off your hands so I'm hoping this hire works out a little better. Anyfuck I was wondering what you all thought about Coach Wilson and not only how good of a coach he might be but also what type of personality he may have. Does he seem the type that would bolt for any greener pastures quickly if he were able to raise the titanic that is the IU football program or would he be more likely to only leave for a destination type opening?

hard to know, Shine. we have a couple plays in the KW playbook that make me want to eat my face off every time we run it. My fave KW offense was at Northwestern, to be honest. Loved that Zac Kustok zone read. I'm not as anti-KW as many (my dad, most homer board posters, some here....and his playcalling against UF was atrocious)....but the O was getting stale (or Landry Jones deep ball sucks out loud....) take yer pick. However, can't argue with results and KW has board and stats there.

The Stoops coaching tree is hit or miss: Leach, Mangino.....success, assholes.....Chuck Long, sucked out loud at SDSU. Interesting it's the OC's mostly that move on....

Kelvin Sampson is a better coach. all things being equal. if he weren't such a dickhead, he's great.

I dont hate KW like alot of spoiled OU fans do (and there's a shit ton around the GC).

What pisses me off, and i'll go a little off subject here, is that alot of OU fans feel entitled to an undefeated season with everygame having 600 yards of offense and a shutout on defense. If not.."someone's gotta get fired godammit!"

Taking the Indiana job is like taking a job at say..Iowa St. in the big XII..nothing against you guys Shine...but how much can you really accomplish at indiana? Maybe a few seasons at 6-6 a great season at 7-5 and get an offer from somewhere else??

I'll prolly miss em a little...but i do look forward to a new OC whoever it may be.

OU fans are not known for their impartial nature....and Sam Bradford throwing strikes on 3rd down tends to make you look pretty good. such that, not having Sam on 3rd and 8 starts to look like crapola.

Jason White on 3rd down was pretty good, too. Unless you are JON. did anyone else notice JON dumping on Drew Tate a while ago? i had come to believe Drew Tate was the best QB of all-time.

I'll never forget the 2000 season ...anytime it was 3rd and long i was so happy it wasnt 3rd and short. Huepel knew how to converts some 3rd downs as well.

Is Stoops heading to Florida? I know that he's denying it, but what's the scoop from OU fan?

According to a guy I'm friends with who Wilson recruited while at NW, he's a gigantic and arrogant asshole.
And what successful college coach isn't? You kinda have to be to win in this scuzzy game.

I'm not defending him. I'm just saying that being an arrogant asshole is actually an important quality when it comes to coaching BCS conference football.

Take Bielema for example..........he's not having half that success if it weren't for him being pretty much a horrible human being. He poaches recruits, he runs the score up, he talks all kinds of shit, he would step on his own mothers heart if it meant an extra couple of wins for his team.

College sports is a scuzzy business, and there's absolutely nobody to blame for it besides us greedy fans.

The upshot is that Wilson's nature actually stands out as being a ridiculous asshole.
That is probably true.

How would he compare to someone like Bo Pelini in terms of personality/maturity? I don't know much about him, but if he's more of a jerkoff than Pelini.......yeah, dudes got some issues. And Bielema is 100x worse than Pelini- he's a notch above OJ on the Quality Human Being chain.

Is he the type of asshole that can control his emotions on gameday? Bill Lynch was a circus act. I think Indiana needs a guy that is able to keep themselves in check on the field but also has the personality to go out and recruit. Lynch was a nice guy that would really meltdown on the sidelines.

more i think about this. reminds me of Mangino. Mangino was going to lose his OC job after the 01 season, takes the KU HC job. or "head job" as his daughter famously reported. Stoops official statement was pretty vanilla.

Indiana is only slightly less than Vanderbilt on the career suicide list.

Jobs like Indiana are interesting ones. It takes the perfect hire to win there. Great coaches could go to places like that and lose. Iowa State is very similar. Their fans are of the belief that Paul Rhoads is going to turn them into a perennial 8-10 win team. I just don't see it given that they have to play Texas and OU every year now (plus Iowa). That's 3 automatic losses most of the time.

The problem with ISU and Indiana is the fan base. Lousy programs CAN win if you have fan support. But if not enough already care about the program, it's a tough job for the coach to sell that to recruits. I was at the Iowa-Indiana game and it was my first trip there for a game. I was at my "seat" (it was more like an entire section) about 25 minutes prior to kickoff. There was a good sized Iowa section a few sections to my right that was pretty packed. Indiana fans were few and far between. By kickoff, they had started to file in a bit. I had nobody behind me for a few rows but I would say the stadium was 2/3 full a few minutes into the game.

Problem was, the Indiana fans didn't really seem to care much about what was going on. Had a big group in front of us (probably 20 people or so). Seemed like nice folks. A bunch of parents with their kids........all came together. Never saw them cheering, never saw them get into the game. They were more interested in their Cokes and Hot Dogs they got from the concession stand.

Iowa State has a similar issue, except they do better in attendance. The atmosphere at ISU games is that similar lame ass family type atmosphere that I saw at Indiana- unless they are playing Iowa, and then it is pretty rowdy. It's a completely different atmosphere in Iowa City.

You just can't win at programs with these type of atmospheres because it's too hard to recruit to them. Another thing I found comical at IU was you can actually stand outside the stadium and watch the game without buying a ticket. I laughed my ass off at that. There's a fence that was wide open right behind the end zone and you can get a perfectly good view of the game. I thought i had walked into the stadium without knowing it, but I was certain I hadn't gone through the gate! I was standing there watching the teams warm-up. That's pathetic. I wish I hadn't bought a ticket!

Any BCS program can win if they have the fan support. They just need the right coach that can sell the upside of the program to recruits. But if you have IU's fan support, it's impossible to win. The game I was at was their senior day and it was against a ranked opponent, but people were basically giving away tickets for pennies outside the stadium. Good luck winning at a program like that!

I doubt anyone proves your point better than Dan Hawkins. By all accounts, he was a kind, honest and genuinely nice guy who cared about his players and always tried to do the right thing. He was also an absolutely atrocious football coach.

Dunno where he stands on the Pelini scale. I've never heard anything about Bo Pelini being an asshole other than being pretty fiery on gameday and complaining about officiating a bit too much.
So who are we to believe? A guy who actually knows him and other coaches and thinks KW is an asshole, or theJON, who doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground? I think it's pretty clear. It's also clear that theJON is attempting to draw out Goobs with all of his comments on Bielema....even though theJON doesn't...well...see my previous comment regarding JON's knowledge.

You don't have to be an arrogant asshole to be a winner. Some successful coaches are just that....some are not. The fact that Hawkins is a nice guy and couldn't win at Colorado doesn't really prove anything. The real key to being a successful football coach is not "being an arrogant asshole", but, rather, just being a good football coach and hiring a good staff. There is no formula for success in regard to a coach being arrogant or an asshole. That's just ridiculous...or, in board terms...jonsense. Take it for what it's worth....a load of crap.

What the fuck are you talking about, Gary Barta? I have formed absolutely no opinion anywhere in this thread about Indiana's new coach.

Learn. To. Read.

Very few that are not arrogant assholes win at this level. Go through the teams and give me a list of winners that don't have a complete jackoff as a coach..........

Penn State, Iowa.........??? Anyone else????

Maybe Texas?? Though I would argue the only qualification of being a Texas coach that is necessary is to not be a complete fucking retard (sorry Mace, but this leaves you and your boyfriend O'Keefe out) with the resources they have available. UT is the easiest recruiting job in the country even with so many quality programs in the region. No program recruits itself like they do.

Our last national championship games:

Auburn vs Oregon (2 very arrogant coaches- Chizik being the most arrogant and biggest douchebag)
Alabama vs Texas (See above on Texas vs Nick "The Dick")
Florida vs Oklahoma (Again, 2 VERY arrogant coaches)
LSU vs Ohio State (Ditto)
Florida vs Ohio State (already been covered)
Texas vs USC (Petey vs Texas......enough said)
Oklahoma vs USC (already been covered)
LSU vs Oklahoma (Stoops vs Saban)
Miami vs Ohio State (Tressel vs a retard gravy training off of a complete a-holes players)
Miami vs Nebraska (Butch Davis' players vs Solich- here is an example of someone not known as an arrogant jackoff)
Florida State vs Oklahoma (Stoops vs Bowden.....that is all

So, as you can see, the majority of coaches in the title games are complete dicks.

I didn't necessarily mean they had to win conference titles and compete for a national title a lot. I was just talking about successful programs in general. Last I checked, Iowa's got a pretty successful program compared to the MAJORITY. Would you disagree?

And I'm fairly certain Iowa has had been better than Penn State for quite some time now. So why do you have a problem with me including Iowa but not Penn State?

Oh, that's right, I forgot..........Penn State has a better program cuz they were better 20 years ago despite Iowa absolutely owning them for the past 15 years.

not sure exactly where i'm put in the position of defending Penn St. I have a good buddy from grad school (Colorado) who went to Penn State and he used to bag on the Big 8 all the time so I did some research on PSU's schedule as an independent.....it was fucking pathetic. they were playing Bucknell and Hofstra and Army. sad stuff. so sad, in fact, that he shut up about it....which is damn near impossible knowing the guy. he got at a job at Texas, which made him even more insufferable. but, he shut up about PSU, though.

you know J, i have also a good buddy from Vandy who grew up in Iowa City, big Hawk fan....so, I try and be amenable to your whole wacky thing.
