huge fan. local public radio station celebrated him on his birthday (i think its in january) every year and I heard it during my senior year in high school. I dug it. first saw the cover of trout mask replica and couldn't stop laughing. some rough albums but some classics, too.

I've heard a couple stories regarding how Don Vliet (his given name - he added the "Van") took the name Captain Beefheart. One is that it was inspired by a strange uncle who would expose himself, squeeze his penis until the head turned purple, then comment about it looking "like a big ole' beef heart."
