I'm getting a bit tired of hearing how Gino Areola's team is going to pass up the UCLA record of 88 straight wins. UCLA was a men's team, UConn is a women's team. Give me a fucking break. It's not the same.

You wouldn't know a womens UConn player if she was dropping her balls in your mouth.

It just goes to show how fucked up the competitive balance is in womens basketball. The men haven't seen an undefeated D1 team since 1976 and here the UConn women haven't lost a game since Obama was inaugurated.

I'm not a big fan of women's basketball. Period. And to compare their records to men's basketball is ridiculous.

there is, without a doubt, a huge difference in levels of competition, which explains UConn's multiple runs, along with a few other women's teams runs.
[MA]it comes down to the simple fact that girls, in general, aren't so excited about playing sports [/MA]
why?
because they are fukking girls. that's why.
so, basically, i agree that comparing the two is a joke, but, if it gets a few of you tards in here to melt over it, it's worth it!!! :)

Not really. The mens game was a backwater in the 60s too. The NCAA mens championship wasn't even on live TV. Really, the two records are quite comparable. They were both accomplished against a watered down pool of competition.

The 88-game winning streak was in the early 70’s, the Walton era. Those championships were on TV and the men’s game was quite competitive, though obviously the field was not nearly as deep as it is now. UCLA recruited a very deep team that included Walton, Keith Wilkes Henry Bibby, David Myers, Sven Nater, and others that went on to play in the NBA.
There is no comparison in competitive balance between the men’s game in the early 70’s and the women’s game now. None.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that more of a few of them were HCs, just as UConn has faced it's nemesis Tenn multiple times and a few other pretty deece (as chick bball goes) teams.
Also, to consider is the fact that there are obstacles to dynasty making these days. Not saying they don't bend a few of those rules, but, they do have them.
Wooden during his run? Not so much.
What makes Wooden stand above all others, even Aurieola (pretty good, btw) is his title run. That is more impressive than a few year run where they had to count more on luck (no injuries, no team having a fluke great game against them).

Wha?
You guys don't enjoy watching the game played at a snails' pace, where the players start crying before they're able to complete a pick-and-roll, and watching players miss layup after layup after layup, all the while claiming...
"We're more fundamentally sound than the men."
If you consider missing layup after layup after layup "fundamentally sound," then it's the game for you.

Watch out that limb doesn’t snap under your massive weight.
UCLA faced a tougher schedule year in and year out.
Their winning streak was bracketed by losses to Notre Dame (the Austin Carr team and the John Shumate-Gary Brokaw team).
In conference they faced the Ralph Miller-coached Beavers, the Dick Harter-coached Ducks, the Bob Boyd-coached Trojans, the Marv Harshman-coached Huskies, etc. All of these programs were competitive during the early 70’s.
There were plenty of other competitive programs out there at the time: Long Beach State (Jerry Tarkanian/Lute Olson), Louisville (Denny Crum), Indiana (Bob Knight), Marquette (Al McGuire), etc, etc.
No. Fucking. Comparison.

But NCAAW has no competitive balance -- every player with any big-girl game goes to UConn or Tenn.

Has he even been offered? Let's not forget, UConn's mens' coach is an icon in his own right as well, so Geno prolly would have to go to a different school to coach the men.

Auriemma ranks up there with the most unlikeable douches in sports. I know there aren't many ways to get yourself out there in the sports bloodstream when their game is played below the rim and at not nearly the same speed and skill level as the men's game but just shut up already about how you're not getting the same treatment as the men's game. For most schools, there probably aren't women's programs without men's hoops (and football). They don't sustain themselves and they play in half empty gyms and probably get terrible ratings on TV. And talk to Illinois and Oakland a few weeks ago...you don't even play with the same sized ball. Don't get mad at us because we don't care and nobody is saying they shouldn't be playing basketball...just be thankful there's too much sports media out there that pretty much anything gets a mention (except hockey :brad: ).
I have no issue with his team and bravo to them for crushing the competition for as long as they have...albeit, it's like watching the Yankees beat up on baseball before there was a little more competitive balance. John Wooden (since I can say this now) is probably turning in his grave at the idea that his record to now going to be held by that guy. Quite honestly, they shouldn't be crossing over the gender lines with this record simply because they're just aren't the same sport. There are no upstart programs in the women's game that can rise up and clip a #1 team on any given night. They've had only 13 different schools win national titles since 1982. In the men's game there were 13 different champs in just 1982 to 1996 alone and 19 in that entire span. Hell, their sport has existed for less than 30 years. They came into existence just before the three point line was put in and they were in way well after they added the shot clock or there was finally racial integration.
Just keep the women's record seperate...not as a sexist thing but just let it stand on it's own. Odds are we aren't going to see a men's team go after UConn's record (wherever it ends up at) let alone UCLA's record or even have a perfect year (a la Indiana in '75). The reason why the mens game is great is because anything can (and usually does) happen. Because you basically have no peers in your sport...you want us to throw you a parade? It's far more entertaining when you know the big guy can be beaten. They've won and won convincingly and outside of Storrs, CT...there can't be many people that can say they've actually watched them play an entire game. Auriemma's mouth is probably a bigger deal in women's basketball than his own team. You're a basketball coach...get over yourself.

Geno,
Get them bitches back in the kitchen and make me a sammich!!!!
As for them breaking the men's record, well, sort of, but not really. You see to break the men's record, you would have to beat teams comprised of men.
I'm happy for your success and your buttfukking pat summitt in the mouf and all, just stop being so defensive about the fact that what your girls play will never ever get the play the guys get.
As for why he doesn't leave, maybe he is a perv in a dream job.
Maybe he realizes he has reached the summit of his sport, just ahead of that summit chick.
Men's bball is NOT the same sport. That dumb wop just might be smart enough to realize this fact.
Maybe, just maybe, he is happy pulling in some pretty good jack, enjoying his status as a god in Ct with absolutely no danger of being shitcanned. Not a bad gig, really.
Also, realize that even though he's been there over two decades, he's still pretty young. Dude started in the job befoer he could get his driver's license, if i remember correctly. He could quite possibly be waiting for calhoun, who is basically the jsc of ct, medically speaking to cash it in.
Would he get the offer? I think he might if he wants it. To my knowledge there is not anyone currently on the men's side being groomed for the spot. A few years ago I would say it was dave leitao's for the taking, but, he has moved on to a head coaching gig elsewhere.
Perhaps Ucunt with his more extensive knowledge of all things roundball in storrs will chime in soon.
