I used to have a ton of the Sgt. Rock comics but they suffered the same fate as all of my baseball/football cards. :(
None of my uncles, or my dad, brought home anything from the war. Too busy trying to stay alive, I guess. I had a neighbor when I was a kid who had a collection of Japanese bayonets, a pistol, flags, etc., that he picked up when he was in the Pacific. He also got shot in the ass by a sniper while he was operating a road grader building a landing strip.

I used to absorb myself into anything WWII when I was a kid, and still do to some extent, and spent a lot of time reading comics and books related to the war. I've still got all of the books but now I watch the movies/mini-series and don't read a lot.

A cousin of mine who fought in the Pacific gave me a Japanese flag. He was the one who would scare me with stories of cutting off Jap soldier's ears for souvenirs and they bled yellow blood. I don't know what happened to the flag, but probably befell to the same fate as my set of autographed 1949 Yankees photos.
Funny you speak of Sgt. Rock comics. I had a student in the early 50's who I'd sometimes catch in the back of class reading them. Several year later he came to visit me. He was an E-8 Airborne Ranger with the 82nd. I had him talk to the kids about his adventures. He told them about reading the comics in my biology class and said, "now I am Sgt.Rock." I used to have former students who were serving come and talk to my classes. Once one of them came and told us about being in a 30 hour tank battle in Desert Storm. Interesting shit.
