Skinny Jeans, Human Excrement: North Korea's Hottest Consumer Products,By Justin Rohrlich December 29, 2010 10:15 AM

A sociology professor at Seoul's Sogang University named Kim Young-soo has interviewed recent defectors from North Korea who say the hottest products for sale right now in the hermit kingdom are instant noodles, skinny jeans (which became popular after a ban on fashionable trousers was lifted by the government), TV drama, and human excrement
"Each household used to use human excrement as fertilizer, but because it's hard to keep up with the amount, human manure shops showed up at markets," Kim said.

Gene Logsdon, author of the book Holy S- -t: Managing Manure To Save Mankind, has written about the history of human manure usage in Asian agricultural applications. Logsdon refers to the 1911 book Farmers of Forty Centuries, by F. H. King in a recent post on TheAtlantic.com:

"In Japan, Korea, and China, manure was treated like a precious gem because it was a precious gem. Every scrap of animal waste, human waste, and plant residue was collected and reapplied to the land. So precious was manure that Chinese farmers stored it in burglarproof containers. The polite thing to do after enjoying a meal at a friend's house was to go to the bathroom before you departed. I am not making that up."

I cant make this shit up!

I knew this hot tv reporter chick once :D ...and she was telling me a story of when she and her boyfriend went traveling around China when they were in their 20s. The story goes that they went to some village to have dinner at some families grass hut and when she went to use the bathroom, it was directly over the hog pen. You pooped in the pig pen. She told this story during dinner,... nice.

Seriously though, weve put chicken poop on our fields with moderate success at about $100/acre. Cow manure works great but costs about twice as much. With the costs of dry fertilizer going up about 20% in the last few months following the rise in corn and wheat prices, these alternative fertilizers have become more affordable again.

I can remember all too well spending days scooping cow shit into piles to throw on a manure spreader. That's all my grandfather ever used and never bought fertilizer......or a bucket for his tractor until I went off to college.

So what? Why is this surprising or remarkable? Shit has been used as fertilizer since, oh I don't know, the beginning of the Agricultural Revolution. Large draft animals are in short supply there so human shit is the most logical feces to use.

i used to keep a small garden when i lived in africa. for fertilizer i could either walk around the village with a shovel and a plastic bag or just tell my students to bring some feces to school the next day. looked odd, books in one hand, bag of shit in the other.
