Edsall to Maryland

Yeah, I know, the sign says BTPCF, but, seeing as we don't have a basketball conference football forum, I guess this place will have to do.
I don't get it.
He is the daddy of UConn's div-1 (alleged) program. He took it further faster than anyone hoped for. He makes decent jack, has nice facilities and with a lot of work and even more luck, could someday make it into a real BTPCF program and go down as the bear bryant or joe pa of UConn.
Instead, he's going to a mediocre team in another conference know more for round balls than the oblong ones. Yeah, the ACC is definitely a football step up from the Bigleast (who isn't right now), but, it ain't the grinder, by any stretch. And if he doesn't produce....quickly, he will be out on his ass.
If Michigan called, or 'bama or any other current or at least recent BTPCF school called, I could see him saying wtf, i gotta give it a shot. But the twerps? pffttt.
They musta wrote him a pretty sweet check.
I wonder what his little girl (UConn sophomore) thinks?

I'd imagine he's getting a hefty pay hike by taking the MD job. I heard he was making base $350k at UConn. He probably at least doubles that at MD.
Edsall is a good coach and he should do alright at MD. His problem will be he's not very popular right now. The new MD AD Kevin Anderson completely and totally bumbled the hiring. They were convinced they'd be able to bring in Leach but the school president balked and they were left hanging in the wind. Fans are now extremely pissed they did Friedgen the way they did and didn't even land Leach.
The school basically admitted they fired Fridge because there wasn't enough "juice" in the program to get those luxury boxes sold. I believe they're gonna have the same problem when Edsall starts because the fanbase is completely deflated right now. It's still a good hire. But I don't think the school is gonna reap the rewards they thought they would when they shitcanned Fridge.

His base salary was over $1 million. I'm fairly certain that he was the 4th or 5th highest paid coach in the Big East.
He didn't get along well with the new AD and wasn't in favor of some tougher academic standards that UConn implemented, which made his recruiting job tougher than it was.
Certainly a lateral, if not worse, move for him.

money wasn't the issue. he was making decent enough coin at UConn.
last night i was listening to the local radio sports dude and he said it came down to the fact that he was in football coach in a basketball conference.
my reply would be, yeah, but you were a football coach in a conference that wants desperately to become a football conference and is becoming more of one every year. and you were in one of the better programs in the conference. And your job yob was locked up tight. Now, you are going to a conference that when it comes down to it, is a basketball conference too, all be it with some football past credit thanks mostly to a pretty good run at fsu for a while. And you are in a program which on a good year is mid level.
so, in the end, he has made a more or less lateral move and gained a shitload of risk. not a wise move IMO. I suspect his relationship with the AD was the determining factor.

Many of the longtime UConn fans are not in favor of their AD.

not a good thing with Edsall gone and what can only be at worst the 2nd most important hire in the history of the football program....Calhoun nearing the verge of retirement. chance this guy (AD) is going to making some pretty big hires.

I was way off.
Edsall made $1.65 million last year, including a $100,000 bonus for reaching a BCS bowl game, and is under contract through 2012 when his salary will be $1.70 million. His contract buyout clause dropped from $500,000 to $400,000 on Saturday.

I don't know how accurate this is but I have heard UCONN may want to speak with Iowa offensive coordinator Ken Keefe errrr O'Keefe.
If there is a God out there, please make this come true. I'm 99.999999999999% certain he wouldn't get a sniff even at this shitty job, but maybe the sports Gods will throw us Hawkeye fans a bone so we can get someone that isn't completely incompetent to run our offense. We've waited for this day for 12 years. Isn't it time the sports Gods finally did something nice for Iowa fans???

UConn hired Paul Pasqualoni, the ex-Syracuse coach.
http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/post/ ... d-to-uconn
Bit of a head-scratcher, given Pasqualoni's age (61) and the fact that he's six years removed from his stint as Syracuse HC. He did coach in the Big East for awhile, but it's a radically different conference now than it was during his coaching days.
On the positive side for UConn, it doesn't look like he'll use this job for a stepping stone. If he has any level of success at UConn, this is likely the job that he retires from.
