Nnamdi Asomugha Has Contract Voided, Will Become Free Agent
The Raiders could lose cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, one of the NFL's elite pass defenders, to free agency in the offseason.
The Pro Bowl-bound Asomugha's contract is being voided because Asomugha did not reach certain incentives this season. A clause in that same contract prevents the Raiders from using the franchise tag on the superstar cornerback -- that clause remains valid, despite the remainder of the deal being voided.
"We have to wait on the ramifications of the new CBA to be able to move on," Raiders executive John Herrera told The Associated Press.
Losing Asomugha would be a big blow for a Raiders team that appeared to be on the rise after finishing the season 8-8. They're already going through another coaching search after Tom Cable's firing following the end of the season
Asomugha just signed his three-year, $45.3 million contract last February. He immediately will become the premier defensive player on the open market once free agency begins.
