Wisconsin's finished top 10 in football and cross country already. Currently ranked top 10 in men's hockey, women's hockey (#1) and wrestling. Top 20 in men's basketball and climbing. How does your athletic department stack up as a whole? And don't give me that Capital One Cup crap. Way too heavily weighted towards a number #1 finish in a few sports.

the Men of Troy have won 90 National Titles, more than any other schools mens athletic programs and more than the Mens and Womens programs combined at all but 2 schools (UCLA, Stanford)
The Football program only went 8-5 and as they were on sanctions they were not eligible for Bowls or Rankings
The Water Polo team won their third straight National Championship
The Basketball team is also on sanctions and scholarship limits, they are 13-11
The Volleyball team is currently ranked #1 in the nation
The Tennis team is currently ranked #2 in the nation
the mens sports are either facing NCAA sanctions or they're one of the top 2 programs in the nation

The Soccer team lost in the second round of the NCAA tournament to notre dame, they went 13-6-3

The Womens Volleyball team lost in the 4th round of the tournament to Cal, they went 29-5
The Womens Water Polo team is ranked #2 in the nation

This thread got me thinking about ND's overall athletic program. And after reviewing the websites for both the Big XII and Big East conferences, as well as www.und.com, I'm having a hard time understanding why so many people were in favor of ND dumping the Big East in favor of the Big XII.

Yes, the Big XII has an advantage over the Big East in football, and yes, it's a substantial advantage, even after one takes into consideration the upcoming realignment. But ND was going to remain independent in football in any event. And the Big XII, AFAIK, has never made scheduling ND in football contingent upon its conference alignment. In fact, ND has upcoming series scheduled with both Oklahoma and Texas in the near future. So football wouldn't, or at least shouldn't, have been a consideration for ND in all of this.

As to the most prominent sport actually affected by such a move, for my money the Big East is better than the Big XII in mens' basketball. Yes, I know I have a bias in that regard, and yes, I also know that there are a number of Big XII honks on this board who will take issue with me on that point. But there are a number of points to consider in any event:

1. The majority of ND fans, or at least the majority of ND Nation posters, probably would agree with me that the Big East is a better basketball conference than the Big XII;
2. Irrespective of which conference is better, most of the kids ND can recruit in basketball would be more excited about playing in the Big East than about playing in the Big XII (although ND has had some success recruiting in Texas, e.g., Carleton Scott);
3. Even if I'm wrong, and the Big XII is a better basketball conference than the Big East on some objective level, the Big XII's advantage in that regard is not significant enough to offset the disadvantages suffered by other sports at ND (see below).

There are at least two varsity sports the Big XII plays that ND does not, at least not on the varsity level (gymnastics and wrestling). And I count four sports that ND plays that the Big XII does not -- women's rowing, men's soccer (ironically, the Big XII plays women's soccer but not men's), and both men's and women's lacrosse. Perhaps men's soccer could play in C-USA (South Carolina and Kentucky play in that conference, since the Meatgrinder doesn't sponsor men's soccer either), and men's lacrosse could play in the ECAC, dunno about the women's teams. But on the whole, the harm that such a move would do to those programs probably would outweigh whatever gains the rest of the athletic department might make.

Yes, ND has to be on guard for a possible fissure of the Big East, or the Big East just up and deciding to kick ND out (ucan't has stated that he wishes that would happen). But I don't think this is the best option for ND, certainly not at this juncture.

Women's rowing will likely be a conference sport in the near future. Numerous of the Big 12 schools have started programs here recently.
