Lara Logan of CBS News Was Attacked and Sexually Assaulted in Egypt

Many of the scenes broadcast from Egpyt in recent days have been joyful, but events took a horrific turn for CBS News correspondent Lara Logan on Feb. 11, the day that former president Hosni Mubarak resigned.

CBS News has issued a statement saying on that day, Logan was physically and sexually assaulted by members of the crowd when she was separated from her news crew. The photo here was taken moments before the attack began.

Logan "was covering the jubilation in Tahrir Square for a '60 Minutes' story when she and her team and their security were surrounded by a dangerous element amidst the celebration," according to the statement. "It was a mob of more than 200 people whipped into a frenzy."

"She was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating before being saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers," the statement continued.

"She reconnected with the CBS team, returned to her hotel and returned to the United States on the first flight the next morning. She is currently in the hospital recovering," according to CBS News.

Several members of the media were roughed up as they tried to cover events in Egypt. CNN's Anderson Cooper was beaten by hostile members of one crowd as he walked the streets on one volatile day. But the ordeal of Logan, who has covered some of the most dangerous hot spots in the world in her wide-ranging career as a news correspondent, sounds particularly horrible.

We can only hope that she is surrounded by friends and family as she recovers from this awful incident. CBS News said it would have no further comment on the matter.

Yeah ,me too. Ive been watching her for years now do her thing in the muslim world. Whether it be interviewing the troops or amongst the muslims themselves, she would be doing her job of journalism with a high degree of sex appeal, as if trying to both inform and seduce the viewer.

CBS correspondent Lara Logan is speaking out for the first time since her brutal sexual assault in Egypt.

Logan was attacked by a mob near Cairo's Tahrir Square on Feb. 11, the day that President Hosni Mubarak was finally driven from power. At the time, CBS News issued a statement saying that she "suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating before being saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers." Her attack reverberated around the world and highlighted the dangers of sexual assault and harassment that women face while reporting.

In interviews with "60 Minutes" and the New York Times which were released on Thursday, Logan described what happened when the mob surrounded her.

"Our camera battery went down, and we had to stop for a moment, and suddenly, Bahar [the Egyptian cameraman] looks at me and says, 'we've got to get out of here,'" she told CBS' Scott Pelley. "I thought, not only am I going to die here, but it's going to be just a torturous death that's going to go on forever and ever and ever."

Logan told the Times that the attack lasted for 40 minutes and involved 200 to 300 men.

"For an extended period of time, they raped me with their hands," she said. "My clothes were torn to pieces...what really struck me was how merciless they were. They really enjoyed my pain and suffering. It incited them to more violence."

She said she wrote the statement disclosing what happened to her in Februrary because it “didn’t leave me to carry the burden alone, like my dirty little secret, something that I had to be ashamed of.”

The full interview with Logan will air on Sunday. She told the Times she does not intend to give any more interviews about the attack.
