Boeing wins major contract to supply new aerial refueling tankers

The Pentagon announced Thursday that it has selected Boeing to supply a new generation of aerial refueling tankers in a deal worth more than $30 billion.

"Boeing was a clear winner," Deputy Defense Secretary William Lynn said after Secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley announced that the U.S. plane manufacturer had won the years-long competition over its European archrival.

Donley said Boeing beat out European Aeronautic Defence and Space (EADS), to provide 179 tankers in the first phase of the program to replace the aerial refueling fleet. He indicated that both companies met all 372 mandatory requirements of the contract but that Boeing submitted the lower bid.

The tanker is to be designated the KC-46A, and the first 18 planes are to be delivered by 2017, Donley said.

"This was a spirited competition, with both offerers acquitting themselves well," he told a Pentagon news conference. Now, he said, "we hope all parties . . . will respect the decision and allow this important procurement to proceed unimpeded." The award "represents a long-overdue start to a much-needed program," he said.

The competition for the contract was marked by bitter recriminations and extensive advertising campaigns by both sides that smacked of negative ads in a political campaign.

The initial contract is for engineering and manufacturing development and is valued at $3.5 billion, Donley said. The overall contract for the first phase is worth "over $30 billion," he said.

This contract is tremendous news for my employment-challenged (worse than most other places) town. Much/most/almost all of Boeing's machining is done here (and the machinists' union has stuck their tail between their legs in recent years).

When we're bankrupt, alone, and there's no gasoline and not much food to go around the air force will look like.

The 787 program has been delayed, at least in part, BECAUSE of union-organized strikes against Boeing. Boeing opened the 787 fuselage assembly plant in South Carolina because of union shutdowns and threats of shutdowns. The employees at the South Carolina plant overwhelmingly voted not to unionize. Which plant do you suppose will be more productive and get to make more of the 787's in the future? Take your time.

The strike lasted a total of 53 days. The 787 is about 1000 days late. Yep, that strike was the majority reason for the delay.

And I hate to break this to you, but Boeing management wanted the strike for a reason I'll get to in a second.

As someone who routine engages in fellatio with Big Business, I'm sure you're taking Boeing management's cock in your mouth by holding up South Carolina as an example of better manufacturing. The truth is that the purchase of the Charleston plant was an admission of failure. That plant was making parts for the 787 before Boeing purchased it from Vought. But they were totally fucking the job up. Boeing sent lots of their people (union) from Seattle to Charleston to help pull their head out of their asses. Even after that Vought was still fucking up royally. So Boeing purchased the plant as a way of gaining control of the manufacturing process. And since that time they've yet to get things in order (a good amount of the latest delays have been due to parts requiring rework in Everett after being fucked up by the good old non-union workers in SC). And I can tell you from personal knowledge that they're still pulling their heads out of their asses to this day.

They've also sent work overseas to suppliers that are non-union. This has caused additional delays (both in getting parts & reworking them after getting them). At one point Boeing was worried about these delays in getting parts from their suppliers because there are clauses in contracts with their customers that lowers the price of the purchase if delivery is delayed. However, there was an exception to the late fines if it met a particular circumstance. One of those exceptions was delays caused by labor disputes. So here we have Boeing management facing delivery delay fines and still waiting for parts from their suppliers. You really think that management didn't force the strike to avoid fines & catch up? If not, I've got a bridge to sell you.

Moving work away from union people to those stooges that don't know their asses from a hole in the ground might have saved some upfront labor costs, but it's cost them royally in delay fines & rework costs. Pretty much all aerospace manufacturing experts agree that Boeing screwed the pooch by outsourcing so much work. And even Boeing management has partially admitted as such.
