Campus police arrest Notre Dame's Michael Floyd

WSBT-TV Report

NOTRE DAME

WSBT has confirmed star Notre Dame football player Michael Floyd was arrested over the weekend for drinking and driving.

Sgt. Bill Redman, St. Joseph County Police public information officer, confirms Floyd was booked into the county jail just after 4 a.m. Sunday.

Floyd was released from jail about seven hours later after posting a $500 bond.

Redman says Notre Dame Security Police arrested Floyd on campus.

A court date is set for April 2.

Floyd is coming off a sensational performance in Notre Dame's bowl win. The wide receiver chose to stay in school for his senior year, when he almost certainly would have been a high pick in the NFL draft.

This most recent incident isn't the first time Floyd has been in trouble. He was cited for underage drinking in his hometown of Minneapolis in January after police were called to a party where Floyd was involved in a fight.
What a fucking idiot. It would not surprise me to never see him in an ND uniform again. Given his first citation about 14 months ago, he could possibly be considered a repeat offender by ND’s Res Life. ND has been pretty consistent with their punishment for alcohol related offenses. In 2005, fullback Rashon Powers-Neal was suspended for the remainder of the season for a DUI in his hometown the week before the USC game. In 1989, 4 starters were suspended for the year for alcohol related issues prior to the season.

The suspension is typically for the remainder of the current semester, but I could see him getting the boot for the fall semester.

Well, congrats on him not killing anyone. Finally, ND ends up in the win column.

At least it was a nice day, right, Killian?

Why don't you expound on that, Schmick? What was he busted for? What was his specific violation? When was it?

Quit talking out of your ass. Brian Kelly has no say in this matter, its up to ND's Res Life.

Here asshole, I'll re-write that for ya....

(Insert U$C football player here) was busted for (rape, drugs, cheating, assault etc....) and (Petey) did jack shit, nothing (ever happened to any of our kids) from our school before and nothing (will happen ever again either)

When your thugs and gangsters were getting popped for rape, drugs, drinking, owning the police you backed them up like they were a bunch of fucking choir boys. What Floyd did was 100% wrong and he may pay for it with the rest of he ND career never happening. What the fuck did Chetey Petey ever do to ANYONE at $C who was accused of shit worse than this? You're a fucking hypocrite.

What USC player was charged with rape?
Sanchez? wrong cocksucker, a chick accused him of rape, sanchez was questioned about it and produced an alibi for the time the rape was supposed to have occurred.... he was at a night club with a fake ID, the night club had him on their cameras.

Cheating? what Trojan player was charged with cheating?

Drugs? One player who had his room searched because a female said she thought she may have been sexually assaulted had less than 30 hits of ecstacy in his room. Turns out she wasnt assaulted but the player was kicked out of USC for having the drugs.

Assault? Rey Maualuga punched a guy in the face at a frat party, Id bet the same thing happens everywhere, the question should be, "who hasn't punched someone at a frat party?"

Floyd was also driving a white Cadillac, if USC coaches should have known something was wrong when Reggie showed up in an 11 year old Chevy shitbox sedan, what the fuck is going on at Child Molester U that this kid is rolling around in a white Caddy and no one says anything?

So a kid's alibi is backed up by him having a fake ID and illegally being in a club? Nice. Oh, and since you asked, Sanchez and Wright were both arrested for alleged sexual assault, and Hershel Dennis was also investigated for the same thing.
Cheating? what Trojan player was charged with cheating?
Kerry Colbert and three USC lineman, when they tried to circumvent the university's foreign language requirement.

Typical excuse for you. "Everyone is doing it, so we did too!" Did you forget about Winston Justice and Frostee Rucker? Justice was also busted for trying to get a hooker.

Do you know it's Floyd's? What kind of Caddy is it?

Shut the fuck up.

yeah, he used a fake ID to go to a night club, bust him for the fake ID, mentioning him in a rape that obviously didn't occur is libel

As I stated before, I wasn't aware of this, if it did indeed happen and none of those players actually did the work of that class, then I retract what I said before, 4 USC players circumvented a foreign language requirement.

MDMA is a liquid that is dropped on to sugar pills that look like smarties and often have little emblems or pictures stamped in to them. 136 of those tablets may have been found but if there were 136 hits worth of MDMA on those tablets there is no way Wright is let off without felony trafficking charges. They were either the tablets without the ecstasy dripped on to them or were 136 hits of the legalized "herbal ecstasy" that was likely not allowed on school housing but is not illegal.

Punching an asshole with a big mouth happens a hundred times on every college campus across the country, very rarely is there ever a charge at all, the only reason there was one with Rey is because it was Rey. Winston Justice had paint ball gun and not one of those high psi competition paintball gun but one that will only shoot about 40 feet and not leave a mark. Several students were playing a game of "gotcha" around campus, Winston was the only football player that was playing and the only one to make the press.

Oh so its a Pryor thing where Floyd was trading his memorabilia to a dealership for a free Cadillac? A Carmax check of Cadillacs for sale within a 250 mile radius of South Bend shows that the minimum price for one was 15 grand.

Im sure the compliance department at ND is all over how that white Caddy was bought, who is making the payments, what the down stroke was, where the money for the down stroke and the monthly notes is coming from and who is financing the vehicle, right?

Frostee Rucker mooned some girls when he was at Colorado , horrible offense for a kid to moon someone... unless that kid is an alter boy and that someone is his priest, then you catlick assholes have no problem with it.

yes "Gotcha" they ran around shooting at each other with air guns that shot little plastic cartridges that had ink in them. Winston just happened to be a large black male who was busted for having one of those replica guns on him. And who cares if he wanted a hooker, prostitution should be legal. why is it illegal to sell something thats legal to give away?

Floyd Suspended Indefinitely
MONDAY, 21 MARCH 2011 13:07 CHRISTIAN MCCOLLUM

When Michael Floyd announced he was returning for his senior year at Notre Dame, he said he wanted to improve his NFL draft stock and get his degree while enjoying his final season in college, but that could all be in jeopardy after his arrest this weekend.

Floyd was arrested early Sunday morning by campus police for operating while under the influence. He’s due back in court May 2nd, but the punishment he faces from Notre Dame could be more damaging for Floyd than what he faces from the court system.

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly released a statement saying he was suspending his star receiver indefinitely.

“I’ve spoken to Michael Floyd and his mother and, in light of what took place this past weekend, I let him know he has been suspended indefinitely from football team-related activities," Kelly's statement read. "Football needs to take a backseat at the moment while Michael gets his life in order, and while I don’t know when Michael will be reinstated, it will not happen until Michael demonstrates he has successfully modified his behavior and the legal and university disciplinary matters have run their respective courses. What’s most important right now is Michael focusing on maturing and developing more as a person while working to improve his decision-making processes.”

Floyd released a statement of his own apologizing for his actions.

“First of all, I want to apologize to my family, friends, teammates, coaches, the University and the extended Notre Dame family for my behavior this weekend," Floyd's statement read. "I understand the gravity of the decision I made and how it could have had catastrophic effects on myself and others. I’ve talked to Coach Kelly and I accept the decision he made. I absolutely recognize that I have many things to work on to become a better person and will need to regain the trust of all whom I have hurt within my immediate family and the Notre Dame family. I fully intend to spend the immediate future improving myself to become a better member of our community.”

Floyd, who was cited for underage drinking last January, could be seen as a repeat offender in the eyes of Notre Dame’s Office of Residence Life. Floyd’s status for spring practice, which is set to begin on Wednesday, is in serious doubt as is his status for the 2011 season.

Notre Dame spokesman Dennis Brown also released a statement.

“The University is aware of this incident and is confident that local law enforcement agencies will handle it in a prompt, thorough and professional manner,” Brown’s statement read. “As for internal discipline, while we do not publicly discuss specific cases, it is well known that Notre Dame has high standards for student conduct, takes these matters seriously, follows the facts where they lead, and, when necessary, institutes appropriate sanctions at the appropriate time.”

Floyd, who was named captain at the team’s awards banquet in January, caught 79 passes for 1,025 yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior, giving him 171 receptions for 2,539 yards and 28 touchdowns in three years for the Irish. He could enter the NFL Supplemental Draft since he missed the deadline for early entry into the standard draft.
I do have to say, given that the incident allegedly occurred on-campus, that I don't share Dennis Brown's confidence that "local law enforcement agencies will handle it in a prompt, thorough and professional manner." Maybe things have changed since I was a student, but back then campus security was pretty much a universal joke, essentially glorified rent-a-cops.
SoCalTrjn wrote:And who cares if he wanted a hooker, prostitution should be legal. why is it illegal to sell something thats legal to give away?
I actually agree with you to a point -- prostitution should be legal. Of course, one could make the same argument as to marijuana, gambling, as well as taking adultery off the books as a crime (it's still a crime in many jurisdictions). Point is, it's not legal -- at least not where Justice wanted a hooker.

Frostee Rucker also was charged with 2 counts of domestic abuse for smacking his girlfriend around. But just skip over that.

And yeah, I'm gonna call bullshit on the Gotcha story.

So by an "indefinite" suspension you're basically saying that he'll miss all of spring ball and be ready for the first game.

No. I think his days at ND are over. Kelly suspended him from all football related activities until Res Life makes their decision. Res Life doesn't typically rush into things, so it will all be dependent on when they make their decision, and if they consider either of his prior run ins as a violation of du Lac. If they do, he will be gone from school for a semester.

From there it would be a grey area. Would the current semester be the one he's suspended for, like with former fullback Rashon Powers-Neal in 2005? Or would it be the next academic semester, which would technically be the summer semester?

Res Life doesn't have a history of going easy on athletes, so my guess will be the fall semester.

I would have to rack ND for suspending one of their best players for the season. A lot of schools could learn from that. So, a pending rack!!

I tend to think you're probably correct in this analysis. But it occurred to me that if that's what ultimately happens, he'll be eligible for a fifth year of eligibility under NCAA guildelines. Of course, whether he meets ND's requirements for a fifth year of eligibility, if that's what he wants, remains to be seen. At a minimum, he'd probably have to take a full semester's worth of transferable credits at a local college and demonstrate a commitment to changing the manner in which alcohol currently influences his life.

That being said, if Res Life decides to hammer Floyd, I don't completely agree with this approach, given ND's stated guildelines for dealing with students. ND's long-standing policy, dating back well before I attended and continuing to the present day, is that the university acts in loco parentis -- in the place of the parent -- with respect to students. Given his age and history, Michael Floyd very well could be at a crossroads in his life at the present moment. Certainly, he's capable of great things, as anyone who has watched him at all knows. But if he has some inner demons he's dealing with when it comes to alcohol, he's also capable of succumbing to those demons. Or maybe it's not quite that dramatic, and he's merely experimenting with alcohol at this point, but overstepped the bounds a few times.

In any event, it's occurred to me that if my kid were to get busted for DWI, I wouldn't throw him or her out of the house for it. Instead, I'd get him an alcohol abuse eval and make sure he followed through with any treatment recommendations. I'd make him talk to Lefty, or other similarly situated people, and have them explain to him the impact that drinking and driving has had on their lives. I'd monitor him closely and restrict his freedom substantially for a significant period of time. But I wouldn't write him off.

That approach jibes much more closely with my understanding of in loco parentis than does the anticipated Res Life approach.

Someone on one of the ND boards cited the specific rule in du Lac, but I don’t have it handy. Basically it said that if he had any other alcohol related incidents that went before Res Life and then had an OWI, it’s an automatic semester suspension. What it didn’t say was what semester. If it’s first offense, they have the option of leaving it up to the rector if he’s still living on campus.

If he’s suspended for the year, my guess is he will transfer to a 1-AA school if the NFL is still locked out. If they reach an agreement, he may declare for the supplemental draft.

Still suspended by Kelly from team activites and Kelly can still suspend him in the fall, but he won't face further punishment from the university.

Big deal. He knows the playbook, he can find somewhere to work out and be in shape for the start of the season.

He'll be out there for the first game.

Not surprised he was reinstated.

Also, he wasn't arrested 3 times, not that it matters. 2 were MIP tickets, only 1 arrest.

I'm not surprised either. Not sure how long ago I posted it, but I said his "punishment" would be missing spring practice, which isn't that big of a deal.

No doubt, the picture is funny. ND stayed in line with what they have always done and suspended the player for the semester in which he commited the crime. I am surprised they didn't take it further. And come on, Mucho, his punishment was also that he can't be a captain. :meds:

Boyd is doing well. He's currently #2 on the depth chart and will probably see some time out there, especially in Nickel packages. he may also get a chance to play on special teams some as well.
