michigan and notre dame in the same thread: helping screw find some ankles to chew on since he can't afford food.

What could UM's throwbacks look like? The uni's have barely changed since the invention of facemasks. Maybe the shade of maize and a plain jersey with no accents. Who knows?

Maybe the leather helmets with the maize-painted sections.

Yeah I agree...this shit is getting old.

I feel like the first night game at Michigan Stadium should be 'special' enough. Why do we need to fuck with jerseys?

i think we are just through the looking glass on this crap. ND doesn't even have throwbacks, do they? they are repping the shoulder stripes from a less than .500 era? this is Notre Dame, right? unless this 2-for-1 commemoration of the Willigham/Weiss eras wtf?

i thought it was cooler when ISU went retro to honor their 1979ish Peach Bowl team (War Jim Walden and getting a bowl invite wasn't slightly tougher than pouring milk in a glass). comical on the surface, at least it _meant_ something.

FWIW, the Iowa State Peach Bowl appearance was in 1977, and Earle Bruce was the coach, not Walden, who was there in the late 80's-early to mid 90's, and never got to a bowl game with the Cyclones.

wow, i whiffed on Walden...i thought he was late 70's/early mid 80's.

edit: my inept response reminded me. i used to have a buddy from Tulsa here in Boulder, we used to (try and) play this several many beers deep bar game called, "name the Kansas football coaches" in reverse sequence....as in starting from current (Booger Allen, then) backwards in time. it was fuggin hard. Fambrough, Pepper Rodgers, Mike Gottfried....one after another. other Big 8 schools were pretty easy, but man KU was tough.

i thought throwback here meant oversized shoulder pads, cowboys collars, mesh bike jerseys, etc.

I'm thinking white facemasks and helmet stickers.

ND’s throwbacks are ass ugly. They have a big green shamrock on the helmet and stripes around the shoulders, similar to the San Diego Chargers with the obvious difference being that the middle part is another stripe, not a lighting bolt.

Anyway, just sounds like another money grab by the university

Ohio State can't play a throwback game......their former players sold all of the old jerseys.

Wearing throwbacks for a special game is understandable but when they're playing a night game at the Big House for the FIRST time, what historical significance is wearing vintage unis? I would've thought something like 100th OSU-Michigan game would've been a time for throwbacks. When you do something for the first time, why slap on old uniforms for any other reason than to sell them.

I'm with Steve, I'd love to see the old helmet stickers come back...the last I remember seeing those were in the Grbac/Howard days.

From the article, the helmet is essentially the same with the jersey number on the side...a la Alabama. Maybe they can rock the big numbers, no names on the back and the blue isn't quite as dark.

in the world of "today and now", it sucks that two trad teams that have been winning at about .600 for the last half decade have to remake their past.

i remember when Oklahoma was scuffling badly in the mid 90's and people said recruits didn't give a crap about OU's past....it can only be worse these days with young people's memory no longer than social media vs. B.C. social media when all the rest of us old folks ate grubs and snails for dinner, were chained to rocks, and wanked off to Pamela Anderson.

i say this not in pomposity since OU probably got lucky with Stoops (I wanted Francione, so diminished were my expectations after Howard and Blake....others wanted Barnett).....I hope there is a lot of money in this for both schools since it's not something either program needs since 1. it's either that's what every one else is doing, yet MIchigan and Notre Dame aren't everyone else.....or 2. no need to remind of the tradition there and if it's all about the money than who cares about tradition and things you can't put a price on and the Phil Knights and NFL of the world win.

edit: i mean what BTPCFB fan doesn't want to see Michigan and Notre Dame play wearing their real uniforms? not some stunt that is a parody of history.

I could live with ugly throwbacks, I suppose, if they came from an era where ND was good. As it is, they come from the Joe Kuharich era. Kuharich, for those who are unaware, had the worst career record of any coach in ND history -- 17-23 (except for Hugh Devore, whose coaching at ND was limited to two one-year stints, nearly two decades apart, in essentially an interim capacity on both occasions).

Here's hoping that at least the shamrocks on the helmet will be right side up, so at least ND isn't sporting the propeller look.

Btw, wonder who Screwy roots for in this series. Or does he root for the stadium to explode?

Exactly. Why doesn't ND wear throw backs from the golden age of Gerry Faust? Madonna blue all around! :meds:

The other weird thing is that they are wearing throwbacks from an era where they didn't even play one another. If you're going to do this, go to the late 40's style uniforms when they actually played.

Pretty bad but at least it's a throwback and not some nike monstrosity with multi-tone colors that aren't even related to the school.

Screw doesn't want to for obvious reasons, some others less obvious.

who cares about throwbacks, jesus i don't. (not an ND endorsement).

like i posted before, either the game stands for itself: Notre Dame and Michigan....this is the last straw, really. a visual gimmick to watch UM-ND. i probably wouldn't watch the game anyway if a Big XII game was on....but that's shallow me. and, like everyone else, i'm watching MSU-Kentucky because the world hangs in the balance there....as we know it. but i certainly wouldn't follow because of the throwbacks.

every uni looks good winning games. not stunts. OU wore stupid throwbacks they didn't make the effort to make the pants match against some patsy in an "honor" to the Wilkinson years....but it was stupid. it's cynical, not respectful to the past. OU wore the Nike Combat things to get assraped at Tech by Leach one of those times where he outguessed Venables.....that was great. woo woo. Nike Combat.

No one has ever died under watch of the University of Michigan's football program, unlike two with Notre Dame. Other than spontaneous combustion in the stadium...

Right, UofM was just the first in a long line in your adulthood to tell you you simply aren't smart enough.

Figured you would be in the Austin Box thread blaming Bob Stoops.

Oh, by the way, care to name the second besides Declan Sullivan?

I'll mention her name, as soon as you tell me how her death was Notre Dame's fault. I think its disgusting how you continue to reference her, incorrectly, to try to somehow paint a University in a poor light and score some points on a message board. Not only are you stupid, but you've proven yourself to be an awful human being.

Pretty fucking stupid if you ask me. Both teams should have updated their unis a long time ago. They're both fucking ugly. :D

Good

Has anything been done with the division names? People widely ripped those...didn't know if they followed through and changed those.

ND's unis are pretty clean...even with the green stripes on the shoulders. I like the old school Adidas logo also. The shamrock on the gold helmet is strange.

I have to confess, ND's throwbacks aren't nearly as bad as I had feared. I still don't like the shamrocks on the helmets, though. If ND must have a decal on its helmets (the helmets are supposed to represent the Golden Dome), I'd prefer an interlocking ND logo.

I especially like the white shoes. ND wore white shoes during the Devine and Faust eras and I'd like to see a return to that on a permanent basis. White shoes just look a whole lot better than black shoes, imho.

UM's jerseys kinda blow and the placement of the adidas logo is the suck. I kinda dig the numbers on the helmets though.

the white shoes/black shoes debate is a staple of OU homer board off-season. Thomas Lott avatar -----------------> wearing white in the Switzer era. Stoops early teams wore black shoes. i don't have a preference really.
