My non-p.m. to Wagon

Did you see the tennis match today?

Wowz!

Good stuff.

Djokovic over Nadal - 7-6 in the 3rd.

World #1 taken down by world #2, who happens to be unbeaten so far in '11.

Don't think I've ever seen someone pound the living piss out of some forehands the way Nadal does.
If his left arm is still attached to his body at age 30, he should consider himself fortunate.

In the end, Djokeovic had just enough to eek it out.
Dude's got a whale of a two-fisted backhand - and is just very solid all over the court.

Pretty compelling stuff, considering no Yank was involved.

Looking ahead to the French, still gotta luv Raf on the red dirt, but Novak looks to be a guy who will be very much in the mix on ANY surface for a few years to come.

Now I'll p.m. you to tell you how much I luv you.

Maybe someone else, too.

But those who have castigated me can fuck off.

You get get a big fat plate of nothing from poptart.

A few years ago Djokeovic said he would eventually beat Roger Federer. Some of the oldies from the wooden racket days laughed at him. Nadal is a Full Western-grip baseline player that will last for a little while longer due to his youth.

The game of tennis is no longer watchable due to physical beasts using racket/racquet cannons to hit tennis balls. Baseline playing Euro's with that fucking grip that kills your elbow have been the craze since Sampras retired.

The Stanford peeps that taught me how to play correctly when I had a good background taught me "serve & volley." All I use are Wilson Pro Staff "Classic" 6.1si rackets to this day.

Give these Euro faggots wooden rackets and they'll have to learn how to play.

would be kinda cool to see a wooden racket tournament.

might bring bjorn out of the woodwork.

wasn't he winning wimbeldon with wood years after others had gone to aluminum or whatever the new fangled stuff was in the 70-80s.

Nope, he tried to come back in his early 30s and play with a wooden racket and wound up getting pwned by a bunch of early round nobodies using the latest gear. Epic fail for one of the greatest ever.

You're right.
He's WAY underneath.

In fact, I do think he uses the same side of the racquet for both forehand and backhand return of serve - which is just... weird, wild, wacky shhhtuff.

Borg's grip (which was considered heavy western back in the day) would be quite "eastern" by today's standards.

You're also right, AP, that much (or most) of today's tennis is rubbish.
Just too one dimesional.

Today's match, however, was really very good.

I'm sure we'll be able to work out a name for this chap if we can just find that magical letter rearrangement.

So far all I get is Dogpool.

Glopsomething?

I'm working on it.

In the meantime, my prayers go out to him.

My former mixed-doubles partner was a Czech girl from a clay court background. She and a few others showed me proper footwork which has long passed me. You can hit the ball as hard as you can and it skids while slowing down after the bounce. Over in Europe they pretty much have clay courts. To stop the skidding of the ball, I think they went to the full western grip to get huge top spin to catch someone not in position to return.

What you now see on grass and hard courts with these new rackets is 140 mph serves that force many to a full western grip as it buys you time with an open stance. It's very difficult to return, hop step, volley, and then get to the net anymore with those high speed serves.

I just hate watching this crap. Me? I hit with heavy top spin and use nasty kick serves when they stay back. If they cheat up the ball toss is the same but I hit flat to either corner. Works for me at this old age.

No, I didn't.

I was too busy watching Kevin Harvick win at Martinsville and the Royals beat the Angels in 13 innings at the K.

It was a good day, as Sundays go.

Was channel cruising yesterday and happened on the Sharapova / Azarenka final in Miami, which I was able to watch for about three minutes before I started gagging.

Purple on green court
Loud, high pitched squeal with every shot on both sides

How women's pro tennis survives is beyond me.

I was going to comment on that, Mikey, but I let it pass by.

I could tolerate about 4 seconds of that before turning the channel.

It's way obvious that the chicks are doing it as some sort of 'intimidation" tactic - and it's just totally ridiculous bullshit.

Unwatchable, yep.

Wow, the difference between a drunken and a lucid AP post is like night and day. Props to you, AP, for finally clacking something out that I understood.
