SE Asian PET

I had about six weeks to myself so went tramping through Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Here are a million photos.

Thailand

Image
Only took three meals to get acquainted with this fucker.

Image
Went back for more.

Image
Train north from BKK to Chiang Mai

Image
Went to one temple, a second, then started toward my third when I decided they all look the same so I'm going to go drink a beer instead.

Image
Pay someone $10 and you get pretend you're elephant trekking through the woods.

Image
Somewhere in southern Thailand

Image
Same somewhere

Image
Best thing about Thailand is the pharmacies.

Image
And the Muay Thai boxing.

Image
Dueling cameras

Laos

Image
Rode a boat into Laos.

Image

Image
Luang Prabang is a really nice spot.

Image
Big thing to do in LP is wake up at the ass crack of dawn and give alms to the monks. Rice suddenly costs like $1.50 even though it's like $0.50 the rest of the day when you buy it for yourself.

Image
LP has the nicest market I've ever visited.

Image
Bunch of Euro-style cafes along the riverfront.

Image
Rode this fucker like 30k through the countryside.

Image
These fat fuckers took a tuk tuk to the same spot I rode to.

Image
Some old women being women.

Image
I thought Laos was one of the more beautiful countries I've visited.

Image
Happened upon some all-night religious ceremony in the Laos capital. Had to watch this shit instead of bone some local girl since apparently it's illegal for Laotians to sex up foreigners.

Cambodia

Image
American currency in Cambodia. Bought a happy pizza here then ended up in some whorehouse that night. Thought some ninja was going to throw a flying star at my neck when I said I didn't want a massage.

Image
Atoned the next day for my happy pizza.

Image
Angkor Wat

Image
Central tower at Angkor Wat

Image
Bas-relief work

Image
Angkor Thom, near Angkor Wat

Image
Angkor Thom

Image
Apparently you buy a cow and get to shoot it with a bazooka.

Image

Image
The Killing Fields

Image

Image

Image
Tuol Sleng Prison, where everyone was tortured before being disposed of in the Killing Fields. Turned it into a museum by taking a photo of how the room was discovered, putting it on the wall, removing the body, and keeping everything just as it was.

Vietnam

Image
Heard in Saigon like 20,000 people a year die in traffic accidents.

Image
Cyclos

Image
At least 10 of these every day.

Image
Bought some weasel coffee. They eat the cherry, shit the bean, and everyone else pays out the ass for it. Most expensive coffee in the world, though I bought coffee that was treated with enzymes rather than coming out an actual bumhole.

Image
I fell asleep while keeping an eye out for Charley.

Image

Image
Phu Quoc Island, if you're looking for places to visit. This is the walk from my bungalow to breakfast.

Image
The walk back.

Sorry if the 900 photos took a day to load but maybe you should think trading in your dial up.

Verrah nice PET. My time in Thailand was in the shithole that is Pattaya City. Would have much preferred locations that look like the ones you went to. I could not stand the smell in Pattaya. And if I never have lemongrass again I will die happy. Though, one place we ate at was humorous...place called Cabbages and Condoms.

Again, great PET.

how'd you guys end up in pattaya? i was at a spot called railay and only ended up there because i was meeting a friend who was meeting a friend, so i guess i lucked out a bit. wasn't excited about it since i had to leave phu quoc, vietnam to get there, but then i had to spend a day in phuket city and, holy shit, that spot sucked.

otherwise, not a big fan of thailand. if i could redo my holiday i'd split most of my time between vietnam and laos.

i asked for a man bike but the guy said my hands were too soft. best thing about those bikes were the seats in the back. this dude rode the same distance i did only with his wife in tow.

Wow. Probably the best PET ever. Must be pretty sweet to be able to take 6 weeks off and do a trip like that. I spent a week in Taiwan about 15 years ago but it wasn't a vacation. I can attest to the shitters being on the floor like that. The food over there was shit. Thankfully there was a McDonalds within walking distance of the hotel. Best Big Mac I've ever had was in ShinTsu Taiwan.

for real. i don't trust mcdonald's in a regulatory environment i sort of understand; can't imagine fake china being any better. at least with street food you see what they're cooking.

My company has a manufacturing facility in Pattaya so I have to go there a few times a year. It's a brutal travel itenerary.

Home -> Louisville (1.5 hours in car)
Louisville -> Detroit (1 hour)
Detroit -> Tokyo (13 hours)
Tokyo -> Bangkok (7 hours)
Bangkok -> Pattaya (2 hours in company van)

3 years ago, I was in our Euro plant for a week, flew back to the USA because I didn't want to miss my daughter's first halloween. Was stateside for 30 hours and was back on the plane to Thailand for a week. That 2+ weeks damn near killed me.

That's a long time to be away from your 27 televisions.

Which way did the flight go? east, west, or over the north pole?

My flight from LAX to Taipei took 13 fucking hours, crammed into coach like cattle in the bowells of a 747. Longest 13 hours of my life. Never the fuck again. Coming back was better as we were upgraded to business class and the flight back to LA only took 12 hours as you got the jetstream at your back. But still, never the fuck again. I literally kissed the ground when back on USA soil.
