...when you were in High School?

I don't mean what was popular, or what you now think was good from back then, but what were you actually purchasing and playing on your record player (for the old farts), 8 track, CD player, Walkman, iPod, or whatever?

For example, Led Zeppelin was really popular and I liked hearing their stuff on the radio but I never bought any of their albums until later.

So, here goes...not in any particular order:

The first album i can remember buying from the record store was Toys In The Attic, though I had bought a Beatles 4 album "best of" collection thru the mail before that.

I woulda' been 10 in 1972 and too young to know shit from shinola about music (kinda' like Screw at 27) but my 7 years older brother was into bands like Yes and ELP at the time. He'd bring these albums home and make me listen to them. It eventually sunk in that they were pretty good. Save your 10cc jokes Goobs, I ain't reading them.

Speaking of 8-tracks, has there ever been a worse recording device? I had a 1970 Skylark that had no radio but did have an 8-track player added on. I had a handful of 8-tracks that I can remember. Heart, BTO, Eddie Money, a few others. It was great when they would jump from track to track right in the middle of a song.

As a little kid I pretty much listened to pop top 40 which, believe it or not kiddies, was on AM. FM "album rock was for older dope smoking hippies. First actual album I remember my parents buying that I thought was cool was saturday night fever soundtrack. Yeah, I know, disco sucks, but that was the creme de la creme of disco.

Within a few year I had moved on to Kiss, Aerosmith, Zeppelin, VH.

I bought ALOT of cassette tapes during the high school years. I still have them in my garage, somewhere. :blush

REO Speedwagon, Styx, ACDC, Queen, The Who, Beatles, ELO, Molly Hatchet, Skynerd, Zeppelin, Ozzy, Fleetwood Mac, The Police, Judas Priest, Rush, Floyd (discovered Dark Side my senior year)

I never bought many cassettes as I was so pissed they were trying to make my vinyl obsolete. Next thing you know, CD's were making cassettes obsolete. Cassette tapes sucked slightly less than 8-tracks but not by much. And try packing the cover of LZ III on anything other than a 33rpm LP. You could trip out on that cover almost as much as the music. Album covers back inna' day had style.

My senior year a dude on my football was very concerned about my musical tastes, specifically because I had some DMC, and Go Go on a tape I made. He introduced me to the Grateful Dead.

Probably one of the best quotes I ever heard regarding the Dead goes like.

"Isn't the first day of finding a band that you feel you have known your whole life the greatest?"

I can't explain it. I think was a live tape with Stella Blue, The Wheel, Not Fade Away and it grabbed me. I was hooked. Sure I heard "Truckin'" "Casey Jones", and all but that live tape - sealed the deal.
