After 6+ weeks of unreturned e-mails/phone calls and sifting through hundreds of rental ads of homes that refuse to accept pets, I FINALLY was able to secure a home in New England. New Hampshire, to be exact. Of course, I have a picture portfolio of the property....and it LOOKS really nice to ME?! Ha! :?

Anyhow, since I know you're from out that way....can you explain to me what the hell "oil" has to do with the heating systems out there? Also, I've never had a basement in my LIFE! We don't have those here in So-Cal. Should I really be scared of like ghosts and stuff in there? I was gonna ask the owners, not that it would stop me from signing the lease at this point. This place was built in 1941.

Ya, the reason we're going there is because there was nothing else available at the time. Also, once there, the roommate's boat will be in dry-dock, which means NO "sea duty" for at least 18 months, which is awesome! We're not looking to spend more than a few years there, if that. And WHAT THE HELL?!!! 1k on oil?!! Wull, the house has a fireplace.....that will help, won't it? Maybe a couple of space heaters in the rooms?

This place is about 1300 - 1400 sq. feet, but that includes the breezeway and the screened patio.

The owner told me there isn't a state tax or sales tax there. I'm going to look into schools when I settle in. I wanna go back, with my reject arse.

Basements are good places to go in the summer to escape the heat. That is useful information if you don't have air conditioning. If not, then they're good places for man caves and washing machines. Since you're there on Navy business, I'm assuming Dover is somewhere near Portsmouth? Get used to Nor' Easters. The good news is that on any weekend you can motor down to Boston in a matter of an hour or so and take in some chowd culture. And there's excellent seafood all over the place.

Ya, well...it's just a rental and but thanks!! Cool thing is, we have a hot tub in the backyard. I just need to learn how to do all the cleaning and chemical up-keep and stuff, but shouldn't be too difficult. Mike seems to think a "winter hot tub" will be fun? Have you ever done that? IS it cool? Prolly should keep REALLY thick robes and slippers near by, right?

I'm really looking forward to checking out the Boston area and all that. Esp around hockey season. I'll be buggering you guys come that time for suggestions on yummy places to eat and visit and whatsuch when that times comes.

Ya. I'm told the washer and dryer is down there, I have a feeling it's gonna take a while before I can get the 12 yr. old to make his way down there though. He's watched one too many of those "The Haunting" programs on TLC, or whatever. :roll

And ya, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is about 13 miles from us, and where Mike will be stationed. Unfortunately, I HATE seafood!!! But, the boy and the SO love it.....so they can go for it.

Good point. Also, for the things you do store in the basement, use plastic bins, not cardboard. And invest in a dehumidifier if there isn't one already there. You don't need any mold issues.

Basements are great. Being along the coast in northern new england, you won't need them to escape the sweltering heat that B is referring too, but, they are still nice to have. Why the fukk you west coasters don't bother with them, I don't understand. Guess it has to do with the fact that scraping an inch of loose sand away qualifies as site work out there.

As for oil, yeah, it's expensive, but still cheaper than electric or gas heat, although the way they go up and down, gas may be cheaper at times. Only thing you have to worry about is keeping your oil tank from running dry. It's that big metal thing in the basement up against the wall. Should have a gauge on the top.

Outdoor winter hot tubs are da bomb.....if you have any money left in your heating budget after the oil man gets done with you. Most a electrically heated and use approximately 3 jiga watts a day to keep hot in january. Actually, if you keep the lid on, it's not so bad, but they are way nicer to sit in with the lid off.

The ground Out West is relatively "new," in geological terms. The ground moves quite a bit, which leads to cracks, which leads to seepage (old houses here have basements, as time went by, they learned better). We also have these things called "earthquakes," and basements don't flex -- flexing is pretty key to having a structure remain standing after a big one, or remaining fairly damage-free after a 5.0-6.0.


Flexing is also key to making KCYmca's "preferred posters list," but that's a different thread.


My buddy's house in San Francisco has a full basement, which looks like it's had plenty of work/grouting done to keep it sealed -- just seems like a bad idea.

Ucan't asked "where do we keep our stuff", which I find interesting. I've always stored my extra belongings in my garage, which I've noticed is something New England homes don't readily provide....at least most of the rentals I've seen. And when they do, it's a HUGE deal. Having "off street" parking spots seem to be a big deal out there as well? Out here, a garage is just a "given". :?

Some houses have more efficient heating systems with owners who conserve. Others live in drafty shacks with outdated equiptment, along with a large family that is constantly opening up the door.


It's good you'll have a fireplace. A wood stove would be better as far as saving some money. I myself own a coal stove for the majority of my heating needs. This past winter I spent under a thousand dollars on heating my place. But they say a good efficient wood stove is still cheaper.


But as for providing some good eye-candy images, reclining by the crackling flames .....fireplace is better.



One other plus you'll notice- the Italian food on this side of the country kicks fucking ass! You'll have literally hundreds of pizza joints that you'll be seperately sampling like a connisuer does a fine wine.

I think left coasters have pertty decent eyetalian joints. lotsa dagos found their way out there over the years. SF has as good Italian places as anyone on the planet. I would guess that SD would be pretty decent. If you want to know where italian food is more or less non existent, try the south. took me over 2 years in nashville to find a decent pizza.

garages in rental units here is a pretty big deal. most newer single family homes here do have garages. many older ones don't though.

I've been to a coupla places in North Beach that think you are seriously full of shit.

The North End in Boston and Federal Hill in Providence are good places. I have had great italian in California as well. It is not as plentiful there for sure, but then again we have no In & Out Burger here so there is that....

Our beaner population has been growing slowly but steadily in the NE. I would guess that there might be authentic messican somewhere around boston. you'd prolly get shot driving to it though.
