I got a Mac....

Book Pro.

I was informed yesterday that Mike picked up a new notebook for me while in Guam. The thing is, I've never used anything but Windows before?

Anyone here have a Mac computer, and if so.....pros, cons, better, or not? I'm assuming it's just a matter of preference? Does this mean that I can ONLY get music from Itunes now? I won't have it for a couple more weeks.

Status symbols. But since it came from Guam, probably tax-free, right?

It would be tax free anyway. He bought it on a military base.

Sooo, that's your final answer? Thanks.

Btw, how gross is the term "OL"?

Any Mac purchased tax-free is a good pickup.

Should I refer to her as bitch?

Good pick up. Do you plan on getting 'Apple Care'? (extended service warranty)

That's a good question. I'll ask dude when he calls back. I dunno what he did? Usually, the NEX offers stuff like that at discounted prices...so he may have?

Upon telling me about the purchase, he informed me that he'll now be buying himself the Ipad2.

ALWAYS a fucking catch!

The mac comes with a one year warranty, pick up the Apple Care package as your warranty nears it's end. My oldest daughter has a macbook, nice machine and The Apple store here in town is excellent on taking care of any problems we have encountered. The Apple Care plan was just short of $200.00 if I remember right.

I got a MacBook in November, first Apple product I've owned. Took a little getting used to after using PCs for so many years, but the OS is so much better. Makes doing the radio here much better using the djay app, which is only available with Macs.

I invested in a mac book pro a few months ago.. so far it's great. Much easier to use/faster load time/ still exploring the apps etc.. but it was a worthwhile investment.

Tards tards everywhere.

IBook/Mac/Whatever is a inferior product, by a ways, that they charge triple the price for, because tards seem to gravitate to the Apple logo.

The difference is the operating system. OSX is efficient.

You can run OSX on a PC platform, and have a much better chunk of hardware with the same OS benefits.

You know... if you're a pussy who's into the whole "Please Apple, may I..."

"Oh, thank you kind Apple, my Lord and Master."

"How much should I give you now, Lord Apple?"

"Wait... I can get a booya PC for $600, but if I want a slower one with the Apple logo and everyone elses reject parts,
you want $2000? Well, that sounds like a bargain, Lord Apple!"

Superior operating system (arguably better, but definitely much faster), much superior marketing gimmick... inferior hardware. Wasn't that way a decade ago, but true now.

I bought a G4 in '99, an iMac in '05 and just picked up a MacBook Pro last month. The G4 is collecting dust in the closet, but the iMac still runs like a champ. I think I've spent a grand total of $75 in repairs on all three combined. Never had a virus the entire time I've been online. Apples are great machines that will last until you get the itch to buy a new one. Yeah, they're pricey, but there's a reason why virtually nobody goes back to PCs onc they've made the switch...

Bullshit Dins. I have had this machine long enough to know that it is far superior in all phases to any Windows machine that I have ever used. I dread going to work and using that damn Windows crap. My Mac is faster, easier, virus free, and the display is amazing. Windows does not compare. VERY happy MAC user here Ana! Oh and welcome to New England.....

Maybe you should reread my post... and then educate yourself.

The PC platform surpassed the Apple platform in FLOPs several years ago. PCs are faster than Apples... not up for debate. As I said, OSX is a faster operating system... on a slower machine. Been that way for a few years.

Macs are PC's...

...ever since Apple dumped the PPC architecture in favour of x86 Intel-based chips.

The only thing that seperates Macs from the rest is:

1. They are expensive and shiny. (because, as you know, price=value... :meds: )
2. They use a highly dumbed down, proprietary operating system.

As a Linux user, I never get tired of this discussion with Mac-tards:

ME: "You know with OS/X being UNIX-compliant and BSD based, and Linux being BSD-derived, we can both use the power of the terminal shell for greater system management."

MAC-TARD: "Termi-whuh?"

ME: ~walks away...shakes head~

You forgot one: Intel ain't selling Apple the top-of-the-line stuff. In fact, Apple uses the cheapest of the cheap hardware (sorry, Appledork -- it's true). Bottom-of-the-line Western drives, the cheapest memory they can et their hands on...

You could build the box they get $1500 for, for about $300-$400. You'd just have to find your own rainbow-sticker to slap on the side.

Having said that, "Buy a Mac" is my #1 recommendation to anyone asking my advice about purchasing a computer.
It assures that:

1. The get coddled by Apple Care and in return all they have to do is slap the platinum card down on the counter.

2. They don't bother me to fix their computer.

3. It seems to give them some smug satisfaction that they are "a cut above". Hey, everyone is entitled to a little happiness.

Macs. Great for pseudo hipsters, grandmothers, mouth-breathers, technologically retarded housewives...etc...

i'm not a lifestyle warrior either way (i've had problem free Dells at home for 10 years...and a sketchy powerbook before that, bad luck i think on that one).....and have an imac in my office.

i want to switch to one of the newer linux systems, ubuntu prolly, but it's been an unfulfilled summer project for sometime. i've been running eeebuntu on my asus netbook for a couple years....but all i use that for is student email, showing vids and powerpoint in class, and surfing. but i think it's pretty sweet....not real happy with the linux mp3 players as far as managing files....but maybe just haven't found a good one.

hate iTunes passionately.

You can sync music and video with Rhythmbox. You'll still need OS/X or Windows to sync apps.

If by "etc," you meant to type "Felcho," then you're $$$$$.

Wait -- he's anti-corporation. I'm sure he clacks out his drivel on a laptop that someone printed out the silicon for, and fabbed up the case in their garage.

If there's a more monopolistic-minded company than Crapple, I can't think of it... yet it's the preferred platform of the armchair revolutionaries to launch their internet (also a cottage industry, tht WWW thingy) diatribes railing against... monopolistic corporations.

They're a cute lot.

I really appreciate all the info and opinions in this thread. Thanks, gang.

I do kinda get the feeling that Apple "insist upon themselves" a bit, but I do like the comfort of not having to worry about the viruses and whatsuch as much. I don't really know what dude was thinking when he purchased 1TB worth of memory for the thing, but we'll see.

Colin Hay tells me it's just overkill.

KC Scott wrote: I've heard though if you do a lot of graphics heavy work - CAD... they are fairly excellent at that

Chances are, if you're doing a buch of CAD, you're in alarge corporate environment, which means uploading your work to a network share.

Which is an IT disaster waiting to happen. MS saw the future -- Crapple thought they were inventing it.

Actually, my oldest friend does CAD shit all da, every day (designs printers for HP). His work machine sports dual Xeons, 16G RAM, running XP64. He seems to think Apples would suck huge donkeydick for that purpose.

At my last IT-ish gig, there was very specific application which ran avery specialized machine. The software only ran on OSX...which sucks so fucking badly for everything else under the sun (and is often incompatible with enterprise software, or at least sucks to integrate), we ran XP over the top, in case anyone else at the company had the nerve to want to work on the projects. It just sucked.

The recipe to turn a network into a nightmare? Just add a pinch of Apple.

At least they don't try to jam that stupid Appletalk protocol down everyone's throat anymore... yet another monopolistic fantasy from Apple bites the dust (like most of them).
