Saw the Tedeschi Trucks Band last night at Humphrey's in San Diego. If you ever get a chance to see this group live, do it. They will blow you away. Great material, amazing talent all around and a great rapport and presence on stage. They all seemed to really be enjoying themselves. The new CD is really good, but does not come close to what they can do live. And then there's Derek Trucks. Susan has this sweet little talking voice, but sings with amazing power.
Jazz, blues, r&b, rock, funk, they do a lot of stuff...all of it good. Besides most (all?) of the new CD they played a lot of awesome and sometimes unexpected covers. Space Captain (opening number), Anyday, Manic Depression, Uptight (Stevie Wonder), Sing a Simple Song / Higher, I've Got a Feeling (encore). Did I miss any? The thing that surprised me most was the horn section. Tenor, trumpet and trombone. They had several extended solos by the sax and trumpet players that were really great. Very funky, very tight group.
Even the drum solo in Uptight, actually a duet by the two drummers, was very good. Interesting to watch them play off of each other. Strange thing, when there's a drum solo the other players often leave the stage for a while and get a dring of water, a smoke or whatever. Most of the players did last night, but Derek Trucks sat down on an amp and just watched the drummers play.
Now for the bad part...
We (the wife, the two "kids" and me) had great seats for this show. Could not have been in a better location. Almost dead center 13 rows back which is close enough to see perfectly and far enough back so you don't have to crane your neck to see the raised stage.
Well, they were perfect if I could have seen a little more of the show. First song a couple of fat assed a-holes three rows straight in front of me decided that they had to get up and dance. I don't mean spontaneously. They got up at the beginning of the first song and barely sat down for the entire show. Yeah, the music was great, and I don't fault anybody for wanting to dance, but when there are about 20 people behind you shouting to sit your fat fucking ass down you might get the idea that not eveybody wants to stand for the entire show. I yelled at them, swore at them, threw shit at them, but they wouldn't sit down. I was tempted to climb over the seats and confront the fucker face to face but I'm afraid I would have really lost control. The old lady would have been mortified. The lady next to me went and got the security guard, but they wouldn't do anything about it. If somebody wants to dance in front of their seat, even if nobody else in the seating section is doing it and there's plenty of room in the back and on the sides to dance your ass off, they won't interfere. Not only were they standing the whole time, but the guy was grabbing his fat fucking skank girlfriend's ass half the time, right in front of my kids.
So, for at least half the show I couldn't see Derek Trucks or Susan Tedeschi. Saw a lot of the horn section, keyboards and bass player, though. All of them great.
Went and got in the car after the show. Had to wait a couple of minutes for my daughter to hit the ladies' room. As the other three of us were sitting in the car, dunk out of his mind fucknut comes stumbling out, over to our car and starts leaning on the front right fender. I start the car. He leans over and pukes his guts out on the ground while his girlfriend is standing there watching, yelling at him to get the fuck up and start walking.
Nice clientele you've got there, Humphrey's. This was the first time I've actually been there in about 20 years - it's about a 65 minute drive to get there. Too bad they have most of the best bands coming through town, or I wouldn't go back. Already have tickets for Los Lobos / Los Lonely Boys and Return to Forever IV with Zappa Plays Zappa.
