fugg it, time for some Zep

This is awesome, 200 or 2000 years from now, it will still be awesome. The 4-5 minute mark is the most intense minute of music ever recorded and I double dog dare anyone to dispute that.

I freaking hate it when embedding is disabled. This one works.

shit, i was in the KC airport (thank you Priceline?)....on Saturday. weird people. you have to go OUTSIDE in million degree heat to change terminals and there's no beer or TV (US Open) inside TSA security (!!!!).

Zep is OK.

I'm listening to Bo Diddley and Fall myself. hell, i think i posted some April Wine and Argent after many a beer not so long ago.

That's ok if nobody cares ScrewballinDC, I was just dusting off the shelves a bit, sweeping the cobwebs and tumbleweeds out the hallway.

Hey MartyinCanada, think you can stretch the page further? That's just rude.

Anyways, Dazed and Confused is the 2nd to last track on Led Zep's (if ucant drops in here to apostrophe smack, I will fight him) first album. Apparently not content with kicking ass from Amsterdam to Zurich, they follow that up with, have mercy, yet another track that makes damn sure everybody KNOWS they just had their ass kicked.

Yeah, I'm partial to the studio stuff, for the purity you understand.

Interesting 'what if' scenario, to think how things might be if Robert Plant died in a horrible plane crash at Kansas airport and Zep became a strictly instrumental band. They might even be tolerable :?:

I liked Zep when I was a kid. I LOVED Zep after a college roomie introduced me to bootleg live Zep.

The challenge still stands Marty, sit in on a show of mine and I will play hours of kick ass live Zep bootlegs. They do exist.

The 73 New Orleans show is pretty hot. The sound is real clean and the mix is nice and dry. Obviously done by a bootlegger who cared. And Zep is in prime 1973 Houses of the Holy Tour form. Been a while since I listened to the Mobile show. I might have to dig it up and jog my memory.

I saw them in Seattle in '73 on that same tour...
pretty amazing show....best I'd ever seen at that time

the ventilation inside the arena was for shit and I remember they had a hard time clearing out the haze....still, good times

Individually, they had chops. I'm not saying they're shit live, but there are waaaaayyyyy tighter bands of the same era and genre.

Page is a creature of the studio. Of the "power trio", he's actually the weak link. His skill never exceeds his aspiration.
Too many dropped notes...coming in a split second too late at times...

One of my least favorite Zep songs, at least off that monster 1st album, but it's still damn good. They could've retired after that first effort and they'd have still been legends.

It was a year before I graduated high school....you do the math...

always been a huge Jimmy Page fan, because 1. he plays riffs like nobody else, 2nd, because he was able to overcome his personal demons, and 3rst because we share the same birthday (January 9th)

You sound like a worshiper of the studio. You want them to sound the same live as they did in the studio, rather than appreciate the ragged edges of improvisation. Go google some Monkee videos, Biff.

No problem.
Far be it for me to tangle with the ghosts of your fondest childhood memories.

Enjoy your tight, 100 song playlist, "classic rock". Don't forget to crank it up to eleven, rip the knob off and get the Led out.

look, you may not like led zepplin (or maybe you do) but regardless of your particular leanings, page is a brilliant guitarist and pretty influential on a lot of modern rock guitarists....sure he's sloppy at times but IMHO, that provides character....

I didn't say I didn't like Zeppelin, nor did I say that Page isn't accomplished...

Their live material is an embarrassing blend of audio pyrotechnics and over-the-top histrionics.
Page and Jones cut their teeth as session men. It's where they shine.

Zeppelin isn't even close to being the best live band of their era, let alone of all time.
If you think so, you are remembering your youth through a cloud of marijuana smoke.

Just for the sake of entertainment, who do you think were the best live bands of their era and "of all time?"

Back while Page was busy over-dubbing the fuck outta SRtS...

...Zappa, and Genesis were putting on far superior performances. Honourable mention to Deep Purple.

I wouldn't even begin to imagine how big a party a Who show circa 72-73 would have been. Those shows just seemed like your good buddies lugged their amps into your living room, invited everyone you knew and then proceeded to blow the doors off. Beats the fuck out of Plants screeching and Page's riff-wanking.

Damn difficult to argue with that. The Who are another all time fave of mine. And Deep Purple Mark II in 1985 is probably the single best concert I have ever seen live.

As far as Zeppelin is concerned, I would recommend listening to their performance at Royal Albert Hall in 1970 that was released as part of their live DVD a few years back. "How the West Was Won" is pretty epic as well. Both of those stack up well against anything from that, or any other era.

If you want to guarantee no Page overdubs, then check out their 1973 show at Southampton. Or their 1977 show in Cleveland. Those are also monsters.

I think we've covered that one.

And I don't think it's even a close contest.

I saw the Dead 4 different times between 86 and 92. Three of the shows were great and the 92 show (The one post Brent show I saw) was meh. For me a Dead show was just as much about the scene and the people as it was about the band. I just wish (shut the fuck up Sam, Felix, Mikey...) that I could have seen them with Keith or Pigpen. I'll give them their props and say that the 87 and 88 Rochester shows are among the 10 best shows I've ever seen live.

Saw them about 12 times between 88 and 95 (a couple of weeks before Jerry died).

It might have been 92 when Bruce Hornsby took over for Brent, but I'm not sure if he did the whole tour.

Tightest live band I've ever seen, by far. Throw in some heavy doses and whatever else passed by, and it was a religious experience.

I resemble that remark. During the 7-2-87 show at Silver Stadium I saw a flying saucer land behind the center field scoreboard during space. No really, I did. It wasn't the 2-3 doses I dropped with a bunch of Hells Angels before the show. Those had NOTHING to do with it.

Back in 88 (?), I learned that just because some Jamaican dude smokes you out with some opium, it doesn't mean it actually is opium.

Took a while to get my bearings back after that one.

Beware of Rastas bearing gifts when you're several doses and a bag of shrooms deep already. Especially if the temperature is well into the triple-digits.

At least I wasn't running away in mortal fear of every glow stick I saw, like my buddy was. But his performance that evening should land him in the Guinness Book for "most drugs taken in one evening."

well now, of all people to reset this thread I had forgotten about, I would've least expected Jsc to be that guy.

Very nice clip.

I don't think there's a live version of this that can do the studio version justice.

This is triumphant, glorious perfection.

Moby, check out how cool Bonzo is on "Black Country Woman." I never really thought of "BCW" as being one of his showcase pieces, but listen to that thing. Dude is just so damn funky and still so powerful even on a goofy little bluesy folk song.

I was 13-1/2 years old when PG came out and I got my sweaty hands on that double album. I was so blown away by Houses Of The Holy, Trampled Under Foot and Kashmir off album 1 side 1... speechless, really.

It probably took me another 10-15 years to fully realize just how great the rest of that album was.
