First of all, there's no reason to believe the source at face value. It was pretty clear that Lennon had moved away from the radicals who wanted his support in the early 70's. But to suggest that he really liked Reagan is a joke. More to the point, musicians shouldn't be expected to be intellectual or wise in the first place. Especially those like Lennon or Dylan who were seemingly anointed with blind public trust, etc. It's embarrassing to see folks turn to Pete Townsend or Eddie Veder for answers. Why not Eddie Van Halen?..
