The Gini Index by itself doesn't work, but then neither does per capita GDP. I don't think you quite understand the ramifications of lack of consumer spending on an economy.

How much disposable income a population has in a capitalist country does matter, it determines how much demand for goods and services they will be able to assert on the marketplace. There wasn't any demand for consumer goods during the Depression and it's important to make a distinction between demand and need or desire.
People certainly desired consumer goods during the Depression, but because they had no money, they couldn't afford to purchase these consumer goods at a price at which any producer could make a profit. Their desire therefore did not appear on the marketplace as a demand and the system fails.

A collapse of consumer demand, leads to a collapse of industries servicing that demand, which leads to job losses which further fuels the collapse of demand, which leads to more businesses collapsing, which led to more job losses and a further reduction of demand.... and so on.
