My first, and I've lived here all my life.
6 stories up and swaying.
Looked out the window at a parking garage that's about 7 stories and watching that sway and the lights. Freaky experience.

Felt aftershocks here near NYC, floor was shaking at the office for about five seconds. Buildings here were not made for this kinda shit.

Why am I picturing the following scene from The Office:
Dwight -- 5.9 is nothing. Talk to me when we get a 9.0 and REALLY feel it.
Michaeal -- That's what she said!!!

I was thinking more along the lines of:
AnaNg -- ST, 5.9" is nothing. Talk to me when we you get 9" so I can REALLY feel it.
SaladTosser -- How's about I stick a pog up your ass? I'm sure you would feel that.

Yeah, no kidding. Was in the Bay Area playing tennis when the bridge collapsed. We kept playing for another 45 minutes before checking for damage since it would already be done. Been through plenty of others including get knocked down by one when I was a kid. East Coast pussies are gripping.

Neighborhood bars are probably busy. Downtown or employment center bars are likely not. MARC just cancelled their commuter lines, those guys are screwed. I don't know if VRE is working.

well, now i'm an official earfquake survivor. that was kinda neat. and no, it ain't much by left coast standards, but we don't build shit here to much of a quake resistant standard, so it was a bit spooky. having the whole fukking world shake, even a little bit is very weird.
hope we get some nice aftershocks.

The geologists have determined that the quake was caused by the recently-discovered Bush's Fault.

I love when liberals talk about "earthquake resistant standards", sure, in a miniscule quake, modern resistant buildings will fare well, BUT, and what liberals dont understand, WHEN BIG ONES HIT, your buildings are GONE.
I love when they brag about the building standards in LA and san fran sicko, MEANWHILE, when the BIG ONE comes, its gonna be,................"Farewell and adu to you fair spanish ladies, Farewell and adu to you ladies of spain................

what? you think that when the "big one" hits san fran or LA, that the buildings and skyscrapers built to code are gonna stay up?
Is that what you think? cause if thats what you really think, then you must be an ignoranus, for sure.

Another 4.5 this morning @0105.
Recovery process has been tedious. Toothpaste moved about .001 mm on the sink.
Supplies are running low, water is scarce, and mobs of displaced people are filling the street as hurricane Irene approaches.
I need some jungle karma clones.

Stay inside!! Seek shelter from the hurricane!!
Get out of the buildings!! They're bound to fall in the next aftershock!!
Inside!! Outside!! Outside!! Inside!!
You all are well and truly fucked.
Maybe you should think about moving to California.

Hardly worth responding to this stupid dumbfuck, but I'll try.
Modern buildings don't generally fall over from earthquakes. You get hundreds of thousands of casualties from 6.5 magnitude quakes in countries like Iran and China because they have lots of buildings made from unreinforced contcrete and stone, which will just crumble in a quake. Sure there will be plenty of damage if and when the "big one" hits. Some buildings are bound to collapse, roads and bridges buckle, gas and water pipelines rupture, etc., etc. but the majority of buildings won't fall down.
There was a 9.0 quake off the coast of Japan earlier this year. Lots of damage, but I don't remember hearing about too many skyscrapers falling over. Most of the damage came from the tsunami. In the 1906 San Francisco earthquake the city was destroyed by the resulting fire.

bhusker has to be a shit troll... a really bad SG's sister troll. I remember sitting in an office talking to one of my instructors @ USC when one hit and she said the high-rise building are on rollers then explained what that meant. Most other places are like what Mikey said.
Tom, you DO realize they measure quakes are on a logarithmic scale right? Anything in the 4.x category are aftershocks. I've never felt one under a 4.3 unless Rumps wife takes a jog.

AP, yes the past few days have been educational. In truth, I didn't wake up at all last night during the aftershock, I was playing.
I work very close to Dulles Airport, so the other day when our building began to shake, I have to admit I was more concerned it was a plane crash or some explosion at the airport. That feeling the floor was shaking under my feet and might go crashing down - was a first for me.
I guess at that point you're at the quake's and building's mercy anyway.
