Home security

Our neighborhood was pretty decent when we moved in but over the last year or so it has started to go down hill. There has been some vandalism and I know one car was spray painted as it sat on the street. Then last week I became aware of two home break ins within a couple of blocks from our house. There are some reasons for it but we can't be moving from here for a few years at least. So I have to take some action for security of home and family. I bought two motion sensor lights. One for the front garage and one for the backyard. I will install them this weekend. And we have double locks on both doors. But I need to do more. So here are my options that I see.
1) A firearm. I'm very opposed to guns in general. And anyway with two children in the home I don't like the idea or of being responsible in the event that some strange accident happened. So I rule this option out almost 100%.
2) Some homes have those security system signs or stickers. Like Brinks home security. I'm interested in looking into that but I heard before that it might be around $30 a month. Add that up to $360 a year. We're struggling already to make ends meet and I don't need any expenses. But maybe I have to.
3) A security camera. Or two. One in front and one in back. I don't know anything about this option but think for sure it would be more than a Brinks home security thing.
How do you people do home security?

As long as your wife and daughter continue to man the glory hole on the back door, all's good.

Had no idea.
I never get included in the fun stuff.
Tell VogelFrau to take her teeth out. Just say "Gimmie the gummy!" She'll know what you mean.

I don't have them. Just a suggestion. Another suggestion would be for you to go take a nap on railroad tracks. You got plenty of those near you, right?

This might be a decent idea. It can't hurt anyway. It might be a dumb question but is it legal? These names are not real companies are they? Maybe the smart bad guys know what real security companies operate in the area and would know these are fake. Even with these signs I'm still concerned. I know about recent crime in our area and I have also noticed that the trend for our area is moving down. I just look at people in the area now and see a lower grade of people than before. It's gone more poor. People are struggling and I know that raises the crime rate. If I was single I wouldn't worry as much. But I have a family to look out for.
Thanks for your input. I'll put up the sensor lights this Saturday and then think about what else I might do. And some of you are jerks as usual.

We had ADT security for our house for a few years & we put up the stickers and a couple of signs around the front yard. The only things stolen from my house have been the ADT signs.
