Mgoblue.com is reporting that the University of Michigan is planning to open their 2014 season with Appalachian State...GTFO! This must be a late April Fools joke, but here is the
article.
The University of Michigan football program will open the 2014 season with a match-up against Appalachian State University on Aug. 30 at Michigan Stadium. This will be the second meeting between the Wolverines and Mountaineers at Michigan Stadium.
"We look forward to facing Appalachian State again," said U-M Athletic Director Dave Brandon.
The only previous game in the series between Michigan and Appalachian State came in the 2007 season opener. The defending FCS champion Mountaineers stunned the Wolverines, 34-32, as ASU blocked a field goal attempt that could have won the game for Michigan at the end of regulation. It was the first-ever game broadcast by the Big Ten Network.
I don't know about the rest of you, but this is a "can't miss it" game.
Note to self: Find the company that manufactures the Detroit area's supply of shower curtain rods, then purchase all available stock.

For me, the RichRod years were more embarrassing and frustrating than the App State loss. I can deal with one blocked kick compared to 3 years of hell. If any Michigan fan will say different, I'll call them crazy. 15-22 in 3 years hurt more than one freak afternoon. Even if they beat them in the "return match" in 2014, it won't change anything.

reminds me of that time state lost to central. were going to kick their asses the following year, if only they didn't lose a second time.
would have preferred to never even have known this game was on the table. now that it is we're all forced to say bad idea, which sounds like we'd prefer to just duck them forever. sigh.
from EDSBS:
After a three year stint in relegation, EDSBS is thrilled to officially welcome the University of Michigan back to Division One football. It's been a long, hard climb back to the APL, but we always knew you'd make it back given Michigan's long tradition of football success, organizational commitment to excellence, and daily, unsubtle telephoned threats of bodily harm to Dave Brandon made through a voice distorter that sounded a lot like Jim Delany.
As a celebration of the Wolverines' return, Dave Brandon splurged and scheduled a delicious cupcake game for Brady Hoke's scholar-athletes and MANBALL enthusiasts. He didn't just go to the bargain bin of directional Michigans, however. No, this one's different: a hint of hemp, a bit of moonshine, and a bit of...is that country ham? Why, we never thought that would work with a chocolate cupcake, but we'll be damned if it isn't insanely tasty. Also, we're pretty sure these have weed in them, and why does this taste familiar--
The University of Michigan football program will open the 2014 season with a match-up against Appalachian State University on Aug. 30 at Michigan Stadium.
This works out so well for Michigan. If they wallop App State, they do what they were supposed to with no added bonus. if they eke out a win, there's little vengeance, because "Hey, eight year old who kicked my middle school ass, WHO'S LAUGHING NOW THAT YOU'RE NINE AND I'M, UM, STILL IN MIDDLE SCHOOL." And if they somehow lose, they lose to Appalachian State twice, and we can all agree it would be very weird to see both Mark Dantonio and Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer attempting to smile a human smile at the same time, wouldn't it? Yes, yes it would.
No matter what happens, greater glory is paid the lowest point in the history of the Michigan football program in exchange for national television exposure. This is Michigan football becoming a celebrity rehab patient. This is Michigan's amateur sex tape that no one wants to buy. We're beginning to think Dave Brandon is not a very smart person. We're beginning to also think this will all end with this Michigan team losing this game in 2014, and then beating Florida in the 2015 Outback Bowl.
In conclusion: welcome back to Division One football, Michigan, and Dave Brandon and every other rich person became a millionaire by accident.

Central is the obligatory in-state directional. Win or lose, State will continue to schedule them. There is only one reason UofM schedules Appy State a second time.

It's a horrible idea. All it's going to do is rehash all the bad memories for the fan base, the clips and highlights will play on a loop days leading up to the game, and when you win 70-3 it's not going to change a damn thing.

this was during a period where schools only had three ooc games - most of them against actual opponents - so the directionals didn't get an annual shot at the major in-state programs. also, the 85-scholarship limit wasn't in effect yet.

on the flip, if we're good by then it won't be such a big deal, more of a reminder of how far we fell and phew, it's nice to be back. things weren't so great in carr's twilight, either. there's also that thing about saying "we'd beat them 99 times out of 100" that we can't really prove until we play them again.

Except those two games were played in consecutive years, suggesting they were set up in advance. The second game couldn't have been intended as "revenge" because it was scheduled prior to the first loss. That's not the same as losing a game in 2007 and scheduling a rematch in 2014.

There isn't much flip side unless you win by 60, and even then, people will just say "meh, that's what you're supposed to do." Pizzaboy should be ushering in a new era of Michigan football, not bringing up past demons. All so they can say "Fuck yeah! We tied the series with Appalachian State!"

no, but there was still an element of bitches got lucky, gonna get paid. then they didn't.

there actually isn't any flip except the game's been scheduled and nothing we can do about it other than say JFC over and over. first game has already been lost, right. really, i think app state made the mistake here: should have just left their 1-0 record in tact. then again, not like i can take a revenge win for granted. seriously, i really never cared about the app state loss. i mean, embarrassing, blah blah blah, but every school eventually trips over their own dick. thought it was worth it at the time since carr seemed like he was about to go paterno on our asses and sometimes phyric victories are a good thing if it meant a new direction. but now us fans have been put in a position where our opinions about the game are limited to:
1. FUCK YEAH, I-AA BITCHES, WE GOT YOU BACK!!!!
2. i'd rather avoid a 1-aa team.
3.
i forgot #3. but it sucked as worse as the first two.
