(CNN) -- The nominations for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 have been released, and it's an interesting list.
First time nominees Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, Eric B. & Rakim, the Cure, and Heart will go up against returning nominees the Beastie Boys, Donovan and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
The nominees are:
Beastie Boys
The Cure
Donovan
Eric B. & Rakim
Guns 'N Roses
Heart
Joan Jett and The Blackhearts
Freddie King
Laura Nyro
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Rufus with Chaka Khan
The Small Faces/The Faces
The Spinners
Donna Summer
War
"The 2012 Nominees embody the broad scope of what 'rock and roll' means," said Joel Peresman, President and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation.
According to the press release, to be eligible for nomination "an individual artist or band must have released its first single or album at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination." That means the 2012 nominees must have released their first recording no later than 1986. (Sorry, Justin Bieber, check back in 2034.)
Ballots will be sent out to over 500 voters, who will choose the artists to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Winners will be announced on April 14, 2012, at the 27th Annual Induction Ceremony, held in Cleveland, Ohio.
Visit rockhall.com for more details, and information about tickets for the ceremony.

Maybe they've been kept out for drug use or failure to cooperate with the media.

That said, amongst the nominees you listed, the following are the only ones that should even be considered:
Donovan
Freddie King
The Small Faces/The Faces
War
Based on body of work, I'd consider the following:
Heart
Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Spinners
War
Heart gets extra credit for being a female-fronted band in a genre heavily dominated by men (yeah, you could say the same thing about Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, but Heart's body of work blows theirs away).
Guns & Roses was a HOF-caliber band, but imho, didn't stick around long enough to merit serious consideration. In-fighting killed that band.

Huh. Not a huge G-N-R fan, but I knew that Appetite was released in 1987 (hard to forget my freshman year at UConn.)
Some quick googling (sup not Sudden Sam) reveals an EP named Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide was released in 1986 (making them 2011 eligible.)
Btw -- the RRHOF sucks ass and Rush licks balls.

Live/Like a Suicide is a great "album." And Terry's right about in-fighting if by that he means Axl being a fucking asshole.

Heart should have been in a loooong time ago.
G&R....meh. Yeah, too much Axl being an a-hole, but also they're riding on the strength of about three songs....not enough.
Donna Summer?! When did she do a song that was R&R? Let them open a Pop or Disco HOF, and she can go in there.

From that list, here are the gimmes...
Freddie King, RCHP, G&R, Heart. (Sam, their early body of work is just ridiculously good, then they became enormous—in more ways than one—rock/pop stars in their '80s/'90s incarnation.)
Debatables...
War, The Faces, Joan Jett, The Cure. (God, it galls me to say that.)
What the fuck were they even thinking in nominating these people...
Everybody else on that list, a few of whom have about as much to do with R&R as Elvis does with healthy eating/songwriting excellence.
Oh, and clearly Rush belongs in the R&R HOF, as do Yes, ELP and...gulp...Kiss. Considering who has made it in, how can Kiss be denied? Purely on musical merit, no, of course they don't get in, but there are buttloads of acts that made it in despite being utterly worthless musically.

Beastie Boys - Groundbreaking critical faves. No Sleep Til Brooklyn. But only one rap group at a time. Next year maybe.
The Cure - Godfathers of whiny emo music. No.
Donovan - Way too hit and miss. No.
Eric B. & Rakim - Best 80s rappers not named Public Enemy. IN.
Guns 'N Roses - G&R is the musical Joe Willie Namath. They had a brief, but spectacular career followed by years of pathetic attempts to remain in the spotlight. Still those first 5 years were spectacular. IN.
Heart - They'll get in. But they shouldn't
Joan Jett and The Blackhearts - Saw her get booed off the stage when she opened for Deep Purple. Nope, no way.
Freddie King - IN.
Laura Nyro - Who?
Red Hot Chili Peppers - The worst band in this group. NEVER.
Rufus with Chaka Khan - Nah.
The Small Faces/The Faces - Legends who should have been in a long time ago. IN.
The Spinners - Could it be I'm saying NO?
Donna Summer - Hell no.
War - One of the all time greats. IN.
So my ballot would be War, The Small Faces/The Faces, Freddie King, Guns 'N Roses, Eric B. & Rakim and a write in for Rush.

G n' R had one good (okay, great) album and a whole lot of sensational press.
Fuck no.
Same for the Beastie Boys. Some decent jams, but they innovated nothing.
And yes, Ill Communication has a permanent spot on my playlist.

Musical acts (see also, not necessarily R n R) that I actually like on that list are:
* RHCP (best on this list, and it's not even close)
* Beastie Boys (no, not just I/C.)
* Eric B and Rakim (if you weren't around in the 80s, you won't 'get' it.)
All the others suck ass, save for GNR. Which had one really fucking awesome album and was shit otherwise.
In case you missed it, Rush tongues donkey cock.

Just change the name to the Pop Music HoF and induct every act that has ever gotten radio airplay. That being said, criteria for induction should be greatness, which is admittedly tough to define and highly subjective. As already stated, some of the acts already inducted and being considered for induction have never produced anything resembling R&R and are/were above average at best.
Even though R&R is commonly considered to be a fusion of blues, country, folk, & jazz, the only performers of music that isn't strictly R&R to be considered for induction should be those who played the blues. Rap, funk, & hip-hop artists should not be inducted - give 'em their own HoF. Miles Davis, Pete Seeger, & Hank Williams should not be considered. Muddy Waters & Stevie Ray Vaughan should. If induction were left solely up to me, I'd try to set aside my personal preferences (although doing so completely would be impossible), and look at factors that include, but are not limited to, longevity, prolificacy, record sales, radio airplay, concert ticket sales, innovation, and influence on other artists. It gets tougher when considering non-performers like producers, songwriters, promoters, managers, and industry executives. My votes on this year's crop of nominees are:
Beastie Boys (No)
The Cure (Yes, but less than enthusiastic)
Donovan (Yes, based primarily on influence since much of his work was more folk than R&R)
Eric B. & Rakim (No)
Guns 'N Roses (No)
Heart (Yes)
Joan Jett and The Blackhearts (Not a chance)
Freddie King (Yes, mostly for influence)
Laura Nyro (No)
Red Hot Chili Peppers (Yes)
Rufus with Chaka Khan (No)
The Small Faces/The Faces (Yes)
The Spinners (No)
Donna Summer (No)
War (No)
Artists such as ELP, Yes, Jethro Tull, The Steve Miller Band, and (ugh) even Rush should be inducted before many current/prospective members.

fuck, Hall of fames need to be really and seriously looked at by the congress. I am sick of the bullshit that gets in. The whole point of even having a Hall of fame is to honor the very very best.
Next, keep it genre specific, Have Hall of fames for every genre. ie. country, gospel, jazz, blues, etc... etc...
Why the fuck should Donna summer be up for consideration? She was pop, dance, disco, wasnt she?
anyone, I mean ANYONE who doesnt think Heart should be in should be taken out back and shot.
These ladies fuckin ROCK! ive seen them in concert, and fuckin shit, THATS ROCK N ROLL!!
You may not like RUSH, but, they are a no-brainer, they should have been inducted a long time ago.
Just remember this you freakin sickos, the man who sits on the rock n roll throne, is the KING, elvis presley, and rightly so. by the way, elvis is also in the country Hall of fame, and the gospel hall of fame, and rightly so.
Body of work is important, its how you get into any worthwhile hall of fame. Guns n roses album, "appetite for destruction" is one of the all time landmarks, however, the rest of their catalogue is pretty fuckin thin, some say aneorexic even. so, I'll leave it up to you guys.
If the people who run the Rock Hall of fame cant fix this problem, I think congress should get involved, maybe Obama can take some time away from golf, you know, to address this problem, HELL, he took time to work on his NCAA tournament bracket?
and, if Obama could ultimately correct this situation, it would fix his shitty legacy a bit, NO wait, NOTHING can fix his shitty legacy, I take that back. Besides, what the fuck does Obama know about rock n roll, doesnt he listen to reggae?
maybe he can work on the reggae hall of fame, if there is one.

Yes, because that's a serious quality-of-life issue for most Americans, and Congress doesn't have anything better to spend our tax dollars on. X infinity.

Diego, did you listen to the Neil Boortz show a few weeks back? He spent a good while listing all the things that the left spends our tax dollars on, AND, let me tell you, its downright sick and
appalling.
These are fundings for things that the left and democrats love. Things like research for gay mens penis size and the effect it has on their self esteem.
DIEGO? yes, I'd rather spend the money on fixing the rock hall of fame instead of the million spent on that study.
in fact, I think most americans would agree with me on that.

As far as GnR and the Hall of "Fame" goes -- tough call.
As mentioned, they had one great album, and a couple of pretty good ones.
Hardly the stuff of a "Hall of Fame" career.
Other side of the coin -- they broke the death-grip the A&R tards had on heavy music through the 80's, pretty much singlehandedly, which deserves some props.

That's not hearsay, bro. The game has thoroughly changed.
The New Game:
Step 1) Go to bar, any bar with 40-something chicks will do.
Step 2) Sit down
That pretty much covers the basics.
Add to that the fact I'm well-preserved (I credit the booze), and ridiculously good-looking for a guy my age, and it's on like Dinsy Kong.
As a bonus, most old chicks (the whorish single ones, anyway) have lost whatever hangups they have, and generally grow to follow instructions quite well... which is cool, if you're a fucking sick fucking pervert, like myself.
He said most of them just want to fuck as bad as he does.
OK, that's incorrect -- old bitchnesses like to fuck more than the average old dude... hence a bargaining chip on the table.
And I thought aging sucked... how wrong I was.
Unfortunately for him, he fell in love again and is now on the same sort of diet as me.
Yeah, I just kinda got over a case of that myself... and my middle-aged ass rebounds off that wall at a much faster clip than days of yore...
should make for some good messageboard tales at some point... although I'll keep the stories of the shit-eating asswhores to myself next time. Or not.
