does it bother you that when you were in school they taught you the whitewashed version of columbus' history?

Does it bother you that you swallowed revisionist bullshit whole without even a shred of critical evaluation. Columbus' voyage was a watershed event in Western history. So, yes, it absolutely deserves to be celebrated.
You wouldn't be the whimpering sack of shit that you are today without it.

Don't know where you went to school, but I was never taught a "white washed version" of Columbus' expedition or the Spanish colonization of the New World.
It's not like the Aztecs were choir boys. It was one imperial power against another and the Spanish won. That's life in the big city.

And that he was the one of the earliest signs of Manifest Destiny. Later the colonists in the New England area used small pox infected blankets to clear the wilderness. Mere amateurs compared to Chris.
Same where I live now, except my grand dad just pointed a gun at them and they settled elsewhere.

No doubt. Just for the record, germ theory wasn't validated until the late 19th century, so the notion of Spanish and English colonists deliberately using diseases as some kind of early biological warfare is totally asinine. It was an unintended consequence.
The biggest killer of the Aztecs and other central American indians wasn't even smallpox in any event. There were outbreaks of smallpox (and let's not pretend that Europeans were immune to it either), but the largest epidemics were some sort of indigenous hemorrhagic fever which was described in detail by Spanish doctors but remains unidentified. The outbreaks of this fever in 1545 and 1576 were some of the most virulent and deadly plagues in recorded history. They wiped out over 2/3rds of the native population.

Don't know about you, but when I was a little kid, they taught me that Columbus discovered America. So yeah, there was some whitewashing going on there, or at a bare minimum, a clearly erroneous view of history.

This may surprise you, but I actually agree with you on this point. Throw in the fact that, at least in my neck of the woods, Columbus Day is usually the last holiday before the weather takes a decided turn for the worse, and yeah, I'm voting to keep it.

People should celebrate Columbus Day every time they look at their dinner plate. Corn, tomatoes, potatoes, most beans, squash, chili peppers, chocolate and vanilla were all part of the Columbian Exchange.

It wasn't whitewashing or erroneous.

The Viking explorations were forgotten by their own people and had zero influence on future events. It was Columbus who opened up the New World to exploration/exploitation. It literally changed the entire world.

what he said.
They settled greenland, back when it was green. then a cold spell hit, probably because people weren't driving enough SUVs yet. Greenland became the cold miserable uninhabitable place it is today, so they went home.

Well, they also made it past Greenland, all the way to eastern Canada. Then again, maybe they're partly to blame for Marty, plus they never did win a Super Bowl, so fuck 'em.
