She sent me an email making the rounds of Aggies who are upset with Sherman. In the email the Aggies talk about the darkest days of the Texas football program. They define it as 1987-1997, however, the slide began after the muffed punt in the Cotton Bowl cost Texas the 1983 National Title. Akers still had Texas in the hunt for a national title for the next few years, but injuries and a 5-6 season in 1986 cost him is job. Then began the McWilliams and Mackovic years at Texas. Below is a few stats from that era:
McWilliams & Mackovic
11 seasons
4 conference titles
2 10 win seasons
4 losing seasons
5 bowl games
2 bowl wins
3-8 record vs ATM (ATM on probation twice during this time and ineligible to win conf title)
6-4-1 record vs OU
72-54-2 overall record .563%
51-31 conference record .623%
Now compare that to the last 9 years at ATM.
Fran & Sherman
9 seasons
0 conference titles
0 10 win seasons
4 losing seasons (Could be 5 after the bowl this year)
5 bowls (will be 6 in a week)
0 bowl wins
3-6 record vs Texas
1-8 record vs OU
57-54 overall record .514%
34-39 conference record .466%
So even if ATM were to be 12-0 the next two season in the SEC they would still not match most of the numbers from the "dark days" of Texas football. So are the Aggies ok with being mediocre? They have said Sherman is not in danger of losing his job. Pretty eye opening when you see these numbers.
