At least metro Detroit is a pleasant place to live. You can't say as much about metropolitan Cleveland.

True, and as shitty as Detroit is, if I was forced to spend a "weekend of fun" in either city, I would pick Detroit. And if you couldn't handle it after 24 hours you could always hop the bridge to Windsor and hang out at Leopard's and slam Exports while the strippers pluck loonies out of your mouth with their vaginas.

It's really too bad Ontario fucked up the whole sports betting thing. It would have been a lot of fun to slam Canadian brews while cleaning up on NFL games.

You are thinking of the CITY of Detroit, moron. Metro Detroit has some very affluent areas. Oakland County in particular. You are clueless.

Metro Detroit's affluent areas aren't located anywhere near the city. All those inner ring suburbs, while livable, are no longer affluent, except for perhaps the Grosse Point area.

Don't rule out East Bay (Oakland, Richmond, etc) -- if you look at crime statistics and other quantifiable measures of shitholeness, it's Detroit/Camden/NO with nicer weather.
As far as big cities go, I really can't bitch too much about mine. While it's a socialist utopia, you've got to search pretty hard for the "don't walk around at night" neighborhoods, it's pretty as all fuck, and the weather is usually pretty darn nice for 8-9 months out of the year.
But still, I've been going all over hell and gone for work lately, all been in the U&L, and everything going right now is in Oregon (various parts, and it's a big friggin state), and I often wonder if I wouldn't prefer getting out of the Metro. Doubt I'll ever leave Oregon, but maybe it's possible I'll leave Portland someday.
The best thing about Portland, is that it's so close to Oregon.

Haven't seen so much as a cloud in at least a couple of weeks.
The fog has been lifting early in the morning.
It'll start the nonstop deluge soon, and probably last until February, at which point it will gradually turn warm and sunny... on some random schedule.
But go ahead and tell me all about the weather here, Atomic Sale.

Atomic Sale? hahaha now that's funny.
88, if you're looking to move West then where? CA is a financial mess but a nice place to live if you're on the coast or in the hills. Oregon? They don't like transplants and Portland is actually decent in the areas I've been. Great food and strippers.
Texas? Well, no state taxes and my friends from there keep wanting me to move there as they say I'm a misplaced Texan. Florida is pretty decent and no state taxes. It just depends where you would live. Where Jsc lives is a beautiful area around Baton Rouge, LA.
Me? Pismo Beach, CA is where I plan on going in the future. Nearby Fresno metro sucks ass and this valley blows. Only good thing is Pat Hill got fired. Hope that helps.

Since Portland is about 98% transplants, this is probably inaccurate.
About the same where I've been staying on the coast.
The inland redneck zones (vast majority of the state)... not big transplant fans.

Well Dins, now that I remember... I was with a stripper friend up there and Portland was cool to me. I didn't know that there were that many transplants there other than culinary school students. There are people from Central Cal that moved up to the 'neck areas and said they weren't much appreciated. I've heard that from everyone that left here to move up there and they hate transplants in Oregon.

He didn't take anything out of context. You mentioned Florida as a possible destination spot for 88, even though he specifically said he wants to go out West. Don't over complicate things -- you really are this fucking stupid. This is no different than the time 88 said he didn't have time to coach football anymore, and you chimed in with suggestions on how he could make coaching more fun. You are not capable of following a specific discussion because you are in a drunken, clueless stupor 24/7.

Btw -- only a complete moron would claim to have a stripper as a friend. Strippers are disposable items much the the coke you inhale off of their oversized tits. Anyone who claims to have a stripper as a friend is a complete moron who is just another sucker being used. Strippers are fucktoys with a one-night shelf life. After that, they are to be tossed aside. Nothing more, nothing less. They are not your "friend."

Take it all the way. The central coast region of California is definitely God's Country. My folks live in the Five Cities. It's the perfect mix of rural/semi-urban artisan style living. The scenery is drop dead gorgeous and no shortage of locations for memorable day trips that will leave the missus dripping.

ucunt, you seem defensive about having stripper friends. I'm guessing you couldn't get laid in a morgue. BTW, I stayed with said stripper in Portland the last time I was there. We met in San Diego at a party and she invited me to stay over the next time I went up there. Many are lesbians but she was cool.
You have issues with women don't you? You work out to compensate for your "inadequacies." Yep, it's okay. Let it out and scream away.

With 88's obvious love of paying high taxes and supporting freeloaders, california is a no-brainer for him.

The chick I was just sitting next to, until I drove her out of the room with my farts, has an old friend who played with them... fascinating stuff.
Johnny Marr is now a Portland transplant, and he was a great addition to Modest Mouse.

There are considerable compensations. You've got wine country, mind blowing costal vistas, some of the best produce on earth, great weather etc. etc.
The central coast is most definitely an area to consider for a reasonably well heeled lawyer.

Many of you people have no idea exactly how spot-on this advice is.
In a very different vein—although it may not be much of an issue to a wealthy guy who's spent many years in snowy climes—practically anywhere on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe would be one helluva choice. Saves some of those niggling $$ issues that come with living on the California side.

Cleveland is rotting like road kill on the side of the road. Manufacturing left years ago. The downtown office buildings are empty. There are a few decent restaurants. But you've got to be hungry and brave to hang out there beyond 10 p.m.
Sound weird, but I love Buffalo for all those reasons, I'm down there like a shot for any excuse. That was a proud city, give me any place on the Great Lakes, you can't beat the atmosphere as there's nobility in suffering.

I've been to every state except Alaska and Maine - My choices when we finally move would be Colorado, SE Tennessee or San Diego
Colorado would be my first choice, but the wife doesn't want to deal with winters, even though we both love to Ski. I think the cost of living is too high in San Diego, though it wins out as most the beautiful area - which leaves The Smokey Mountains as the most probable choice. It's gorgeous country - and great for hunting/fishing. Knoxville is a great city - very clean - the exact opposite of Memphis shithole. It's the capital and UT is also there. For those interested there's also no state income tax in TN
I will rack every bit of this post other than that bit about knoxville being the capital. I lived in Nashville for 3 years, which was the capital, during the nineties, anyway.
BTW, do consider Nashville. Not quite as pretty as Knoxville, but, a great place anyhoo. Would still be there if the damn OL didn't drag me back to Ct. Also, if live music is your thing, Nashville is the best place on the planet to find it. Can't swing a dead cat without hitting at least a half dozen world class musicians.
Places on my list of nice places to live are the SW, particularly NM or AZ, although, I would rather it be northern AZ. Phoenix is just too damn hot. UT or CO would be nice as well.
