acute pancreatitus 2 - Waga 0

I'm typing this from a bed in St. Lukes hospital, where my sick ass has been since 3 am Sunday. Suffered all day Saturday until the pain become unbearable to the point I drug myself to the nearest ER and asked for help.

Thing is, there's really not much that can be done to treat it other than give you narcotic pain killers and abstain form eating or drinking anything until the inflammation subsides. I had hoped to stay here only one night, but my doctor said I wasn't ready yet.

Seems the pancreas excretes this enzyme called lipase to help digest whatever garbage it is that I ate or drank. Blood tests showed that I had about 5 times the normal level of lipase in my system, thus causing excruciating pain. After the first night in the hospital that level and barely gone down.

yep... sucks to be me right about now,

That shouldn’t be a problem, considering the pisswater he chooses to drink.

On May 10, 1994, at the age of 30, McKagan became gravely ill due to acute alcohol-induced pancreatitis, which caused his pancreas to swell to the size of a football and leak digestive enzymes into his body, causing third-degree burns. He was taken to Northwest Hospital and Medical Center in Seattle, where he was monitored until the swelling went down. He was told by his doctors that he would be dead within a month if he did not stop drinking.

You'd better have good insurance. The rest of us shouldn't have to cover your ER expenses.

Hope you feel better soon, though.

Get well soon, Wags. You're a good guy.

If you can't get the medical attention you need in your Third World shit-hole, have someone wheel you up to the Canadian border. I'll have some of my people smuggle you across. I can hook you up with a hospital card, where you can get the best medical treatment in the civilised world...all for free.

Technically, this is fraud...but sometimes a bro has to bend the rules for another bro.

P.S. If what you have is contagious, could you please cough on Mikey before you come up here? TIA.

So what happens when you visit FL and then are hospitalized? They still pay for that?

Take care of yourself, Wags, and get well soon. I guess I'll have to drink that beer I was always going to buy you. Damn, no alcohol? I'd call Kevorkian.

an alky I work with got prison raped by pancreatitus a few years back.

Didn't look like much fun. Hasn't touched a drop since. He was a bud drinker too.

I think maybe there's a correlation there.

Alcohol doesn't cause pancreatitus. shitty alcohol does.

I will raise a cold SA product tonight for you, wags and thank god and my fully functional pancreas that i drink real beer.

Thanks for the well wishes, all. Doctor is going to release me today I just heard, said the lipase levels were down to just about normal. I guess 3 days w/o eating will do that.
Mikey wrote:You'd better have good insurance. The rest of us shouldn't have to cover your ER expenses
I have decent insurance, should cover about 80%, but I'll still probably owe these fuck about $4 grand when they get done bending me over.

Well, Wags did say he was feeling sick as a dog when he made his brief appearance in Chat.

Guess he wasn't kidding.

So, Wags, gonna quit drinking?

Alcoholism is one (of many) causes of acute pancreatitus. It is not the sole cause. Kind of like how Reeves Nelson is one of many causes of UCLAme's failure in basketball, not the sole cause.

Wags, pancreatitis is a nasty and painful inflammation and is most commonly caused with excessive alcohol consumption. Smoking adds to the risk. Those digestive enzmes amylase (to break down starches) and lipase (to break down fats) are the diagnostic tests they would have run on you. The elevated levels of lipase may be 5 to 40 times normal of 0 to 160 units/liter from your blood work. So if you're at a 6 x level and felt that badly, guess how some of the alcoholics I've seen in hospitals feel when there's are typically much higher. They typically keep you for at least 72 hours for that condition.

I hope they also tested your liver function with AST/ALT. If I were you I would ask the doctor for those results. AST and ALT enzymes from the liver give you a better look at how much damage alcohol has caused. Those levels do go down when you cut back on alcohol. I would know right?

Hope all is well.

Well since you so politely asked, the answer is today so far. Hey, since you're an old fossil, where is your next SS check going to, a Brazilian wax or those old people wrap around sunglasses/blinders?

Probably for awhile, doubt I'll quit altogether, but I certainly intend to cut back considerably. Just like with smoking, there are many time where'd I pop one open not so much because I really wanted one, but just out of habit and because I could.

While I really like my beer, the price to pay is just too damned high.

Anyways, I escaped the hospital and it sure feels good to be back home now. The only place I want to be at less than a hopsital is a prison.

Again, thanks for the well wishes from everybody, not really what I expected

Good to hear you're doing better. No wonder you had such a coniption when B played jazz saturday night.

I recommend you follow my drinking habits of the last 29 years or so. Drink a lot less, but make it better stuff. 6 packs of good beer cost no more than the 30 packs of the swill you are used to. Make the 6 last as long or longer than the 30 and you will be fine.

Just putting two and two together. Wags drinks swill. My buddy from work drinks, or should I say drank swill, til it nearly killed him. Both had pancreatitus.

I drink real beer. My pancreas could kick both their pancreas' arse with my spleen tied behind its back.

Ergo, shit beer causes pancreatitus.

EOS.
