Watch the piece, Sam. It says he already had a black kid on the bench but that that game forced some people into accepting the idea that integration had to come to Bama football.
Of course, being a Bama puff piece they try to attribute more credit to Bryant than was probably due, even going so far as to intimate that he scheduled the game specifically so that USC and their black players would crush Bama and force the locals to wake the fuck up, but overall it's a decent effort.
