later, bitches

It's been years since I've had a proper vacation, now I've got 10 days off in front of me and I'm like a kid at Christmas.

off to New Mexico tomorrow for my daughters graduation on Saturday. 12 hour drive. After that, heading to Vegas to lose whatever sanity I've got left... maybe a side trip into Cali just to say I've been there... well I have been there, if you count a stopover in LAX as being there. But wifey hasn't seen the ocean, she likes The Counting Crows, figure I owe her that much... hopefully we don't run into M2.

The obligatory side trip to the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam, boss told me I should make a short detour thru Sedona, I have no idea why, but I'll do it because my boss is pretty cool.

We'll be taking the laptop along and a disposable camera, perhaps I'll check in with an update, but don't expect any PET's. Regrets in advance if I miss Smackie's or Bri's radio show... or some epic apostrophe smack.

btw, people don't really sell their hair to a wig shop in Vegas, do they?

Have an awesome trip. PET or not, take a few shots. I can't believe your little girl is out of grad school. Props to lil' Wags.

I'll be busy myself. No time to bore with the details, but I don't promise a show until after Memorial Day Weekend. Intro to Linux prof just went straight nuts with a deliverable next week and the work schedule is ramping up. Might be one of the few, the proud, the telecommuters soon. But we'll see. Back to work.

Trust me... there isn't a chance in hell you'd would be able to find San Francisco in 10 days.

You don't do road trips much... do you Wags ?

I don't live in Vegas anymore.

And we don't allow kids in our pool. Just local wildlife.

That's right... St. Louis is still part of Missouri.

I was confused with your advanced sense humor for a second.

Matter of fact, I've been desert-free for over a year now, I think, and I'm pretty happy about it. Having said that, I'm sure work will find me in some arid shithole soon enough.

You can do a PET when you get back home, right?
First he'll have to take his disposable camera to WalMart to get the pictures developed. May have to pay extra to get the film pictures scanned to electronic files.

Somebody should really tell Wags about digital cameras. They come pretty cheap these days. If he breaks down and gets a cell phone he may even be able to use that.

I suggest the Canon S95 as a pocket point and shoot.

Can be had for $300 or so.

So that means you drain the shit out of the digester before you scrape the tank. Do you need a GED to get that kind of work?

Just checked into scenic Clovis, NM and our dive motel for the next two nights... after a 12 drive thru KS, OK, and TX, this place seems like paradise, sorta. Wifi and cable.

Nothing remarkable about the trip, but remind me to never drive thru downtown OKC again in a driving rainstorm. That sucked.

Oh, and pretty much everything after Amarillo smells like a ginormous cattle pen, slaughterhouses all over the place. Ever hear of Hereford, TX? Aptly named, the stench follows you for miles after leaving town.

Anyways, going out for dinner with the daughter now, TexMex, of course.

Actually, it's called reading comprehension.

By the way... some people are more interested in the "journey" as opposed to just the destination.

Yes, the journey at 39,000 feet is quite nice. Gives you that much more time at the destination. If I wanted to experience bum fuck nowhere, I would go there.

Road trips are just an extended commute.

You inflicted that shit on yourself Wags. Stop your whining and post some pictures of your daughters friends munching on each other. And guess what..."most" hotels / motels worth your money have wifi and cable these days.

When we used to go see the boys at Camp Pendelton, we took a 6:30 am flight for 2 hours and 5 minutes to San Diego, got a "rental" car and were sitting on the beach by 9:45 am. Fuck driving 12 hours.

If I wanted to learn how to be "white trash"... I'd give you a call.

Any fat slob can take a plane to get somewhere... a real man has enough time and money to enjoy the journey.

Psst... you can't land here...

That's not part of the "road trip" from Oregon to California.

Kinda depends on which part of Oregon to which part of california.

Last trip that had me going from Oregon through california looked pretty much exactly like that... since the majority of both states is desert... dumbass.

You would think the self proclaimed expert on all things California would realize that the OR/CA roadie he described would take way more than 12 hours. hell, I doubt you could make it from Portland to SF in 12 hours, never mind local, which is what Derron was talking about.

BTW, I have done the Portland to SF roadie he described and it is an awesome trip....for a few east coast flatlanders. For a lifelong left coaster, however, it is just a fukking commute, as lefty pointed out.

Has toolio ever been right.....about anything?

I've made it (as a passenger) in about 8 or so, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Straight through (short meal stop), it can be done in 9.5-10 doing a pretty good clip (people really haul ass through Southern Oregon and "real" Nocal). Budgeting 11 hours is a solid plan though.

If you're talking the east sides of the states (although Oregon goes way farther east than california), you can drive a pretty serious clip through the desert... people going 100 all day long (gets sketchy at night, since that's when the critters come out in the desert).

Drove from Albuquerque to Flagstaff today. The scenery in western NM is awesome, eastern Arizona not so much, unless you like barren desert. My boss said I should make the detour thru Sedona, so I did.

Wow, just wow. 23 miles down some canyon on switchbacks, breathtaking views around every turn. Probably drops 2,000 feet in elevation. You can't see stuff like that from an airplane. If you ever get the chance to drive thru, you should.

Leaving Sedona, got back on I-17 and am now at some Indian casino/resort hotel in Camp Verde called Cliff Castle. Nice place, pretty pricey room, but it's worth it. Won $120 in the casino, so it's all good.

Las Vegas or bust tomorrow.
