I'm thinking it would be next to impossible to do that show anything BUT hammered. Dawson was awesome plain and simple. He was way ahead of the dipsy screaming famlies and played them like a fine fiddle.
In my book he was second only to Gene Rayburn and Match Game...wait...he was the star of that show as well, no small task with the likes of Charles Nelson Reilly, and Brett Sommers to name but a few.

Ever see the episodes where he meets his 2nd wife? Was funny to see him develop an attachment to her as the Johnson family progressed in the show.
There were not many as quick witted as Dawson. Looking back makes you wonder why he was never groomed for late night TV.
