Police: Musician Bob Welch kills self

(CNN) -- Bob Welch, a guitarist who played with Fleetwood Mac before launching a solo career, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his chest, Nashville, Tennessee, police said Thursday. He was 66.

Welch's wife found his body in their Nashville home about 12:15 p.m., Nashville Police spokesman Don Aaron said.

"All indications are that it was a suicide," Aaron said. A suicide note was found, he said.

Welch played guitar with Fleetwood Mac starting in 1971. He left the group in late 1974, just before Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks joined the group.

Nicks said in a statement that Welch's death was "devastating."

"I had many great times with him after Lindsey and I joined Fleetwood Mac," singer Nicks said. "He was an amazing guitar player -- he was funny, sweet -- and he was smart.

"I am so very sorry for his family and for the family of Fleetwood Mac -- so,so sad," Nicks said.

Welch's biggest hits, "Sentimental Lady" and "Ebony Eyes" came from his debut solo album "French Kiss," released in November 1977.

I saw him play at Portland one time..he went to hit a chord and the guitar would not work, he tried it again, then pulled it over his head, smashed and kicked it off stage.

I don't know, but it's very sad. He was a big part of why Fleetwood Mac became a supergroup.

FM did some interesting stuff when Welch was in the band, but the peak (musically) for FM was the years with Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, and Danny Kirwan.

Of course, eventually the desire to eat and pay their bills overcame them and they became a radio-friendly pop shit-eating band. And they got rich!

Mick Fleetwood has a band that plays blues and puts out an album on occasion these days.

Precisely. They were at their best in the late 60's. Then Peter Green left the band and a year later Jeremy Spencer decided to join the Children of God in order to fully explore his pedophilic tendencies, and Fleetwood Mac went downhill. I saw them touring the Bare Trees album, and again right after they released Rumors. The first concert was by far the better one.

Stevie Nicks did destroy the band. She created so much drama, and you combine that with the entire bands ravenous need for massive amounts of cocaine to snort, and the shit was bound to go bad. Early on, there were a tremendous group. They did some good work after wards, but the early stuff does not get as much recognition.

I remember seeing a video of Mick playing the drums and dudes eyes were about to bug out of his head. I imagine he hit a good 1/2 gram of blow before that session. He was wailing on the drums like a madman, and never missed a beat. Christine McVie is way underrated and does not get the credit she is due at all. I think musically she and Lindsey Buckingham were the best in the group.
