Me, too.

Almost impossible to believe that Ben Davidson was actually 71 years old.

What Davidson said in that tribute clip is true.
That being, he probably couldn't play in the modern NFL.

Back in the day, delivering the 'discreet' (or sometimes not so discreet) cheapie was sort of a badge of honor.

He was a guy who played on the edge.

No way that act would play today.

He was a fierce player who intimidated opponents as a member of a defense known as "11 Angry Men." His 1970 spear of Chiefs QB Len Dawson sparked a classic brawl that cost Kansas City a win and ultimately the AFC West title.

That November day, Kansas City led the Raiders 17–14 and a long run by Dawson appeared to seal a win in the final minute.

But Dawson was drilled by Davidson after the whistle, prompting Chiefs receiver Otis Taylor to attack Davidson. The benches cleared and offsetting penalties were called, which under the rules at the time, nullified Dawson's first down.

The Chiefs were forced to punt and the Raiders tied the game on a George Blanda field goal with 8 seconds remaining.

The sequence not only cost the Chiefs a win, but Oakland went on to claim the AFC West at 8–4–2, while Kansas City finished 7–5–2 and out of the playoffs.

Not that I paid too much attention to football that happened before I lived outside of learning about team history, but I can only assume that each team had a few "enforcer" types on defense. Maybe not every team. Maybe only AFL teams, just to keep the Chiefs honest and not grabbing dicks on every snap.

As for playing today.......................yeah, no. I don't think I ever saw a clip of Davidson not tackling someone by their neck. Pretty sure that gets frowned upon these days.

RIP

watch to the end of the vid to see Ben Davidson spear Lenny Dawson well after he was down and the resulting melee. I'm not sure that even many Chiefs fans remember how badly these teams hated each other.

It was probably tough for him not to. He was fucking gigantic even compared to today's players.

RACK John Madden smoking on the sideline. Definitely a different world.

That is OUTSTANDING!

RACK Wagon, also.

Those were the good ol' days, for sure.

Yep, genuine hatred back in the day.

He'll, dealing with the explosive personalities he had to contend with, I wouldn't be shocked if that was a joint.

Even for that era of anything-goes football, the blatant cheap shot at 1:15 by George Atkinson is just ridiculous.

Back when football was fucking football...the Raiders ruled.

"I hate to say this for print, but I'm 70 years old and I've never had a real job."

RIP Big Ben

Yeah, that's insane.

How many weeks would a guy be suspended for today if he did that?

Pretty sure George was out ballin' again the next week.

Snake Stabler memories from 35-40 years ago are very fun stuff, but there is a thing called... LIFE, and Kenny hasn't proven to be nearly as good at that as he was at finding Freddie on the comeback route.

Some might call him nothing but a drunken loser.

Sad, but also fairly predictable.
