A collection of amazing or horid twitter posts...

Figured I would start a thread where we can share twitter posts.

Here is one from the third string QB at The Ohio State University:

“Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL, we ain’t come to play SCHOOL classes are pointless.”

Clearly he hasn't been attending English.

You should have hyphenated "third-string."

Take your claim up with the editors at many fish wraps. As soon as they agree on the use of a hyphen between said words then you can call me out on it.

Nah, Lefty, M Club is correct. Just because editors for sports pages are clueless and/or lazy about their craft, it doesn't change the rule. Also, there should have been a comma or semi-colon (or, even better, a period and a new sentence) following 'SCHOOL.'

Van,

I can't find many hard and fast rules on hyphens. Websters treats it as two separate words.

As for his lack of commas, take it up with him.

No, they don't. They offer no listing for it at all, either with or without a hyphen. However...

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/second-string

Same principle.

"He's our third-string quarterback." That one requires the hyphen.

"He's part of the third string." That one doesn't.

I checked my AP Stylebook and it doesn't say anything that would indicate M Club isn't correct. Also, if you do a Google news search for "third string" (without the hyphen, mind you), the whole first page of results has it hyphenated. It seems as if the fishwraps have already come to a consensus on this one...

The rule is pretty simple: Use a hyphen to combine adjectives that comprise a single idea, especially to avoid any confusion. A lot of string QBs walking around, you know.

Just pointing out since it always seems to be Capt. Comma Splice who takes time out of his busy day to lampoon someone else's English with the inevitable "your stupid" meta-criticism.

Uhm...

After reading the title of this thread, I'm having a hard time bringing myself to run grammarsmack on the third-string-quarter-back-guy.

We made it this far, and no-one has commented? You-are all a bunch of third-string-quarter-backs.

Hey, I wasn't going to say anything about any of it, but then Lefty had to go and attempt to defend the indefensible after M Club pointed out his obvious error. At that point, sure, why not, it appeared there was likely some fun to be had.

Look, I don't claim to be the best writer around, but when multiple fish wraps including the NYT don't hyphenate and neither does Webster's dictionary I fell pretty confident in my non use.

is "third-string" an actual entry in Webster's?

No, it's not, which I already pointed out. 'Second-string' is, however, and it's the same thing.
