Stanford vs. the Domers

Post by Mikey »

Bigtime (big-time? big time?) offensive shootout here, 10-3 at the half. Only touchdown was scored by the Stanford D. Two turnovers on both sides. Missed FGs. Stanford is putting massive pressure on Golson but have a hard time catching him.

I expect turnovers to be at least as big on this wet field in the second half.

I don't normally bitch about officiating but this was ridiculous. Every questionable call went for ND. And the last play was pretty obviously a TD. Oh well, ND at ND on NBC - what can you expect? Worst coverage of a football game in memory.

You have every reason to bitch, Mikey. That last call at the goal line was fucking bullshit. Christ-in-a-replay-booth...

Yeah, that's a tough call at the end there. I believe the play should've been overturned and ruled a touchdown, but it wasn't the easiest call in the world. Stanford definitely didn't get the calls ND did, but the Cardinal had their opportunities and they didn't cash in on them. Tough break.

Pretty imaginative play calling there on the goal line. ND had no idea what was coming... :meds:

Yeah, it obviously was if his left elbow wasn’t down before he tried to stretch the ball across the line… Something neither of the announcers mentioned/saw at the time.

Playcalling sucked. Nunes went back to looking like a high school caliber QB. It must be frustrating to play for Stanford's D.

Uhhh, you do know that it was a Pac-12 crew on the field, don't you? Claiming a pro-ND bias for the refs, under those circumstances, is a tad unusual. And ND got whistled for a few unusual penalties during the game, including a false start by the center, as well as a few other false starts that were close enough that they could've been no-calls.

As for the last play, in addition to what Ken mentioned, there was the issue of a whistle as well, from what I've been told. Not to mention the fact that he lost control of the ball before it crossed the goal line.

It was a tough way for Stanford to lose, admittedly. But somebody was going to lose that game.

A whistle was not the issue. if the Headlinesman had blown his whistle his right arm would have been extended over his head, which is the signal for dead ball. If he did blow his whistle then Stanford would have been able to replay 4th down as the runner wasn't down.

The TD call or non call came down to the HL's call, had he called it a touchdown, replay would have upheld it.

In my opinion it was a TD.

Pac 12 officiating is so horrific that it is quite common for them to err on the side of the home team OOC as to mask their proven shortcomings. It's a no brainer for them.

So the whistle should blow anytime a runner is stopped? If so for how long should he be stopped before the whistle blows?

Agreed on this point, I don't think the video was conclusive enough either way.
