NIU in the Orange Bowl

Post by M2 »

Against Florida State, Oklahoma out. Bad day for the cabal.

Northern Illinois will beat Florida State.

Only two good BCS match ups... Oregon v Kansas State and Notre Dame v Alabama. The rest suck.

Oh, the MNC from two weeks ago. Why play this game in September when you can just have it in January instead.

But it's a nationwide conspiracy. No way Slive could get away with keeping them out of good bowls. And the selection committees are in on it too. What the heck happened?

The rules are what happened. No conference is allowed more than two teams in BCS bowls, and by my count Alabama and Florida make....lessee here...one...and yep, two!

Ohio St being on probation just may have a little something to do with it, as well.

So despite the fact that the BCS rankings are rigged, it really doesn't matter? That's disappointing. All that severe SEC bias for nothing.

Well, aside from that logjam near the top that ensures one SEC team or the other - possibly even two! - will get into the one BCS game that matters.

However, it's just as Herbstreit said...it's a joke and the BCS sytem sucks. Oklahoma should be there.

As I watched the NIU-Kent State game, all I could think about was that if either got into a BCS game, BTCFB had gone to shit. When KSU came back, I thought this is unreal...KENTUCKY beat these guys. Beat the fuck outta them, 47-14.

But no, we get NIU. At least they beat Army...by one point!

This is wrong, but NIU may just beat the Seminoles. I recall listening on the radio as the Huskies beat Alabama a few years ago. IIRC, Michael Bush ran all over the Tide.

Whatever.
Srsly, an absolute tragedy. NIU gets to play in a game no one gives a fuck about rather than letting us all watch the Sooners roll over and lose by 400 in yet another BCS game. The BCS is sooooooo unfair...unless we're talking about divisional runners up getting to play for the MNC. Then it's okay.

Who played NIU in November?

Or are you referencing the SEC's daunting November weekend?
Well, yes and no. I'm referencing any BSC team playing any mid-majors then pretending your conference full of 7-5 teams means something.

Last I checked, under the rules, a conference champion from a non-AQ conference gets an AQ bid if they finish in the Top 16 and ahead of at least one conference champion from an AQ conference.

Northern Illinois finished in the Top 16 and ahead of at least one other AQ conference champion. And Spray can't pin that one entirely on the Big East, either. One word: Wisconsin.

If you don't like the rules, change them. But everyone agreed to these rules going in.

It's all due to rampant anti-SEC bias. SEC, being the dominant conference, should be guaranteed one spot in each BCS bowl game.

Oh yeah, these guys are worthy of a BCS Bowl. I don't know how anyone can criticize an SEC schedule when you look at this one and know that theyare going to the Orange Bowl over a team like Oklahoma. A matchup with the ACC might be the only thing that keeps them from getting embarrassed. So why play a tough schedule when you can get by with this one?

Iowa L 18-17

Tenn-Martin W 35-7

Army W 41-40

Kansas W 30-23

Cent Michigan W 55-24

Buffalo W 45-3

Akron W 37-7

W Michigan W 48-34

Massachusetts W 63-0

Toledo W 31-24

They're not claiming to be from the biggest baddest conference in the USA, or entitled to a berth in the MNC because of a stellar one loss record.

They got a bid to a BCS bowl (not the MNC) as the result of a rule put in for the expressed reason that the NCAA wanted to give the mid-majors a shot at a big bowl game under certain circumstances. They won their conference championship and qualified under the rules. Oklahoma didn't.

Your dumbfuckery is breathtaking. Why don't you answer your own question by pointing out that one BCS team team that left their AQ conference that one time so they could schedule an entire season of MAC schools.

Or let's play make believe and pretend NIU beat Iowa. That undefeated schedule would have no doubt landed them in the...Orange Bowl. BFD.

What exactly is the problem with NIU? They played their "pitiful" schedule (as opposed to BCS teams who play five shitty conference foes on top of the four MAC-level schools they themselves play every year) and earned a shot to play a traditional power because it turns out getting through the ACC, Big East, or Big 10 wasn't that difficult either. Has zero effect on the MNC though does seem to bother the likes of you who can't believe the sanctity of a farcical bowl system is being violated by allowing a team to play a traditional power they have no business sharing a field with even though they might actually beat them. You are truly ponderous.

I don't see it. Why leave to rebuild when you are just about finished rebuilding? Not to mention it is easier to play for the title coming out of the ACC than the SEC.

Rankings should determine the matchups.

The 4 game playoff is still a buncha shit. Got to go to at least 8 to get it right.

Let's just go the NHL route and let every school play in a bowl.

How about the NFL way? Losing record? So what? 2-10 ? You still go to a bowl. You can even be the national champion!
You know a real easy way to avoid all of this? Blow up the fucking conferences. No conferences = no bowl tie ins and you get the best bowl match ups possible.

The only people twisting the rules have been the power conferences, who basically admitted their success is a direct result of playing those same shitty schools they want to lockout of any of the perks they have rights to as members of D-1A football. You can't have it both ways: either don't play them at all or give them a chance to participate in this BCS farce.

After what I saw... Alabama barely beating a horrible Georgia team (worst game I've ever seen when it came to tackling) and lost at HOME to a Big 12 school (Texas A&M).

Alabama has no business being in the MNC game, whatsoever.

Oregon should be that team, hands down.

There's a difference.
Not really. Clearly Oregon is just as good as Stanford, or didn't you watch the game? There's nothing to choose between them despite their divergent styles of play.

The bottom line is that Oregon is very difficult to beat. On those extremely rare occasions when someone manages to hold down the Ducks' offense, Oregon's defense tends to pull the same trick. It's not as if Stanford or Auburn beat them 50-14. No, their offenses were kept in check too. That's just how those games went. Bama and Stanford likely have better defenses but Oregon's offense makes up for it. In the end you still have to play the game, and once that game is played Oregon usually wins. When they do lose, it's not by much.

With apologies to Wags, the what matters more than the why or how, and the what says that Oregon can be counted on to be there at the end.

Besides, Bama only faced two good offenses all year and both times the vaunted Tide defense got lit up. So that argument is a wash.

Anyway, yeah, looking at NIU's schedule and especially the way they scabdicked through so much of it (unlike Boise St and TCU in their BCS years), they clearly don't 'deserve' to play in a Big Boy bowl game. The simple fact that they were one play away against a nobody like Kent State from falling out of the Top Twenty ought to tell anyone what a farce their high ranking really is.

Then again, aside from the payout/time slot the Orange Bowl is no longer a Big Boy bowl game, so who cares? No one gives the slightest fuck about that thing anymore, not since it's become a sparsely viewed de-facto home game for bad ACC teams that get to host the least attractive Contractual Obligation option, which is usually some steaming pile of crap from the Big Least.

And had Ohio St not been on probation and the B1G not been a tepid bowl of oatmeal this season we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

Go ahead and rattle off for us a list of all those epic wins 11-2 Kent St (they weren't undefeated heading into the NIL game, you ridiculous moron) garnered over impressive foes.

Exactly. There weren't any. As in...none. They did however manage to get curbstomped to the tune of 47-14 by woeful Kentucky in their only matchup against a team from a real BCS conference.

So shut the fuck up about both NIL and Kent St. Be glad for the charity crumbs allotted to your MAC minnows as a result of Ohio St's probation and the bowl-game pairings fine print. Otherwise, neither belongs on the big stage.
