One concern for Cal is that they are hiring the same type of coach that just got fired. Teddy was also "an offensive guru" and got the job because of it.

Dykes' LA Tech team finished last in total defense this season and 121st of 124 in penalties. But that was still ahead of Cal so I guess he has that going for him.

The key to his success will be who he hires as the DC, and how actively he recruits that side of the ball. Rumors around Tech were that he spent almost zero time with the defensive recruiting, leaving that entirely up to his assistants.

Some of my sources... say that we'll be bringing in DeWayne Walker as the DC.

If so, this is an excellent choice. He was the DC for Fucla for 3 years and did an outstanding job for them even when the team was complete shit.

In his 3 years with Fucla his teams gave up 331 yards per game... that would place him second in the PAC 12 this year just a little behind Furd.

I would suggest that 2800 yards rushing & 2900 yards passing (Alabama) is far more balanced than 2700 yards rushing and 4200 yards passing (LaTech).

Of course, a Cal math wizard may differ with me on that.

Those grad rates are from Fatfurd's first 5 years at the school. He's gone now.

and just a little heads up... It's a little bit harder to graduate from one of the top 5 academic schools in the World than it is from an SEC "school". I use the word school very loosely.

It's not Stanfurd... where once your accepted it's simply impossible not to graduate from there. They pass you no matter what.

Dykes is hardly the only football coach to have earned a Masters Degree. It's not a requirement at a lot of colleges but it is preferred. Most small colleges....where a lot of Div. I coaches start their careers....do require the degree because the coach is also a teacher.

Dykes has apparently inherited a bunch of underachieving idiots with a 48% team graduation rate, so it will be interesting to see how this extremely intelligent man can relate to the morons he's coaching.

In the Big XII alone at least 7 of the head coaches have masters degrees. OU, OSU and Tech don't list graduate degrees on their head coaches bios. Granted that doesnt mean they don't have one, but it is unlikely.

Funny that Tech doesn't require one. Oh, wait no it isn't. While Lubbock might not be in the South, it isn't the intellectual heart of Texas either. Granted their tornado research work is great, but I don't want my surgeon saying "guns up.".

But hey, here's hoping Dykes gets Cal turned around cause that is just more gold for us since he is from Texas.
