Taking hostages in Algeria is not a good idea unless your goal is to die a martyr while not accomplishing a damn thing.

It's a shame some 23 hostages died as well, but that's how a government must react to a situation like this. I seriously doubt there will be a 'next time' in Algeria.

As for employees of multi-national companies deciding to take assignments in shit hole Islamic middle eastern countries, you may want to rethink that career choice as well. The world will always need jizz moppers.

My take is that Algeria is a festering shithole, like the rest of the Arab world. Since there are Americans there, it is in our interest to help the authorities free Americans being held. Too fukking bad the stupid fukks refused this help. If we had an administration with any semblance of a clue, that might not have been the case.

OK, great. I'm sure Wags is now aware that Southwest Asia and North Africa are separate geographic regions. Culturally speaking there isn't a whole hell of a lot of difference. Let's get back on track here.

Considering that the United States was directly responsible for creating the conditions which led to this attack by supporting and arming Islamo-fascist terrorist groups in Libya, I'd say Algeria has probably had a belly full of our "help" by now. You also need to understand that this was not an attack on American or European interests. It was an attack on Algeria's political stability and they reacted accordingly. Algerians, like all sand niqqers, are too fucked up and stupid to run their own oil and gas facilities and are totally dependent on Western engineers and technicians for efficient operation. Any attack on them is an attack on the Algerian economy which underpins their political stability.

It sure sucks for the poor bastards who got caught up in this particular crossfire, but I don't think that there are going to be too many future crossfires in Algeria now that the Islamists are certain that Algeria's negotiating strategy is a bucket full of hot death dispensed immediately and without regard to casualties.

That was sorta' my point in the first place, before the cadre of clowns chimed in about geography and other irrelevance. But where I was trying to lead the discussion to was the supposed reasoning behind this hostage taking attack. Supposedly, the dip shits were pissed off about France interfering err... invading Mali to repel like minded insurgents in that country.

Now, France invading anybody should be grist for at least a 5 page thread in and of itself. But it gets better in that how does taking hostages in Algeria somehow affect France's action in Mali? Are there no hostages worthy of taking in Mali?
