I don't recall Penn State ever wearing numbers on the sides of their helmets, Alabama-style. That must have been even before my time -- and I'm an old fart.

Yes they did back in the late 50's through the 60's. My brother had a full boat scholarship there in the early 60's. I think he was #43.
