A world without nukes

Do you believe it can be done?
I don't care if you think it
should be done or not, I'm asking if it is possible. Does the US have to be the first to give up nukes if Global Zero is truly to be reached? I ask because I watched the first half of the Hagel hearing and the state of our nation's strategic arsenal was a hot topic.
I don't believe a world without nukes will ever happen because I don't think the US will ever give up having the final call. The power is just too addictive for the ever-expanding National Security State (TM) to give up.
What are your thoughts on the amount of spending on missile defense? Frankly I think there needs to be a huge cut in missile defense spending. We're not Israel, we have no need for an Iron Dome or Star Wars or any of that bullshit, for now. Losers like North Korea won't be able to hit us for years, the Chinese can't hit us and Iran doesn't have shit.

So, I guess we just wait till the missles are inbound, then get around to a defensive system, huh, general screwy?

I'm offering an honest take in a forum that has been more lifeless than AP's heterosexual sex life.

The Royal Navy always had its fleet pegged at 1.5 - 2.5, the size of its nearest competitor? If you're a bit *ahem* light in the wallet, it might be a good idea? Is this about reduction or elimination?

It was done, until about 1945 or so.
Albeit for different reasons: until about 1945 or so, man did not have the capability to develop a nuclear weapon. Now that we have that capability, I don't think it's possible to unring that particular bell.

If there were no nukes, do you suppose nations would develop other technology to accomplish mass killing? It has sort of been the progression for the better part of recorded history and all.
On that point, I agree. And to answer Screwy's question more generally, I don't think anyone who has nuclear capability would ever give it up voluntarily.

The whole point of the Global Zero movement is that the US already has, minus the nukes, enough conventional weapons to wage mass destruction of any other state on the planet.

Of course not. You can't put the shit back in the donkey. A world without nukes is a dangerous pipedream.
