57 channels and nothing on.

More like 457 channels, but, I feel like I'm stuck in a springsteen song this morning.

Sitting here drinking my coffee wasting time on the puter. Unfortunately the OL has the clicker which means mind numbing channel selections.

First we had the pinnacle of bad cable TV, the hoarding show. In this episode, they kick it up a notch by having a medium help the family of the hoarder unfukk the house of their late hoarder mom. All it needed was a drug addict intervention to complete the bad TV trifecta. I really do believe this may be the worst moment in my TV watching career. And that's saying something, having sat through a few episodes of honey boo-boo.

This bit of cable TV hell is followed by the wife swap show. No, fukkers, it's not that kind of show. It is where they have the OLs swap households for a week. This episode though, could go that way. This is a celebrity version. Kate Gosselin and Kendra. I'm trying my best not to pay attention to the show, so I ask the OL, who is the other wife?

"Some whore, who's been in playboy and done porn"

Oh, THAT kendra, I thought to my self. I didn't go into any critiques of her porn videos as that wouldn't have gone over well.

So, let's say you have to be married to either Kendra or Kate. Who do you go with? The chick that 94% of the male population has seen in a porn video or Kate super bitch?

I think I have to go with Kendra. I've got thick skin and could learn to deal with the daily "your OL did porn" stuff.

What is the worst bit of alleged reality TV you've seen?

My wife likes to watch those pregnant teens on MTV. I tried to sit through a couple but I can't. I'm not sure what is more offensive, MTV broadcasting that crap or those people for breathing.

WTF is it with females and worthless TV? Don't they know there is good stuff on like wrasslin' and fishing shows?

I just let the kids dominate the tv these days. My pop culture trivia prowess has taken a big hit.

So, it's Sponge Bob then? Better than hording or strange addiction shows.

There are a few dumb "reality" shows I enjoy. Duck Dynasty is my favorite. Uncle Si is the man.

Heavy rotation of Spongebob. I don't smoke weed so I can't appreciate it like they do. The girl loves Monster High which is a cartoon with slutty looking zombies as far as I care to learn.

Plus all the Disney shows so it get to see all of Hollywoods future train wrecks seven years before they fall into rehab and/or porn.

I haven't touched weed in decades and I still "get" SB. What does that say about my intellect? :(

I could see how Sponge Bob could be the best TV show ever made, if one was baked.

I'll stop by the "Spanish" channels and check out the hot looking babes. If there is no interesting ball game on, I spend most of my TV watching on History, ME-TV, and TCM/AMC old flicks.

Rack the hell out of spicTV. I think there is some sort of company policy they have that says they can't go more than 30 seconds without showing a scantily clad hottie. Doesn't matter what show it is.

Don't be knocking My Strange Addiction. You can't tell me that a black chick who pounds rolls of toilet paper like it's cotton candy isn't compelling television.

I cancelled our cable subscription about three and half years ago and never regretted it for a single second.

Yeah, I dumped cable a year ago in favor of Direct TV, so I could watch the Cubs on Comcast and WGN. Don't ask me why I thought that was a priority. We get far more movies and sporting events than we got on cable and there's always something worth watching. I watch a lot of History Channel, Biography, A&E, and the Military Channel when I'm not watching movies or sports.

Cable and Satellite are turds from the same asshole, so don't go feeling all superior about it.

BTW, A&E along with TLC are the absolute dregs of TV. Hard to believe once upon a time it actually was The Learning Channel.

Who said anything about feeling superior? Direct TV offers more channels and more choices than our cable. Btw, A&E actually has some decent programming.

sin,

1993

A&E and TLC used to be great channels. Today they are pretty much full of reality freak shows. There may be an exception or 2, but, not many. It does have Duck Dynasty which is not technically "decent", but, it is funny as hell.

The only A&E programming I watch is Duck Dynasty and Biography, and occasionally the Saturday morning "Flip This House" shows. Some folks like Storage Wars but I've never tuned in.

I watched the first episode of that zombie show on AMC. It was interesting, but wore thin very quickly. I liked Pawn Stars, Storage Wars, and Pickers. They also became boring after a few episodes, especially when they began to take themselves seriously. Same with Bar Rescue and Restaurant Impossible. I'm still waiting for someone to tell those two assholes to hit the road. It seems all roo contrived. I can't believe that Survivor is still on network TV. The folks that write for the WWE have more originality than most of those shows. Vast wasteland is putting it mildly.

Here's the standard viewing in my house on a week night:

Winx Club. Absolutely horrible.

Image

Good Luck Charlie. Actually not a bad show.
Phineas and Ferb. Awesome.
Victorious. I can live with this one.
Jessie. Garbage.
A.N.T. Farm. Stinky garbage.
Shake It Up. God help me.
Austin and Ally. Words escape me.

I finally get control of the TV after my daugher goes to bed and I promptly fall asleep on the couch. Getting old sucks.

Fukkin' OL will get on the phone with her mom and sister and share the latest gossip about this and that QVC host. Bitches really need to get a life.

Any "shows" I want to watch I catch on hulu and/or netflix. I think there are 2-3 shows, at most, that I try and watch.
My kids watch a some of the shows that Python mentioned but my son would much rather watch sports (rack me).

Just cut the cord this week. Fuck Directv and their bullshit charges. It has been 4 days and I haven't missed it once. I suppose catching up on Steelers games will be more of a pain in the ass. But the rest I could care less about or can watch online.

Thank you 'holic for this thread. It was the last straw I needed to make the call.

So, you are cable/satellite free?

Rack you.

I suppose a good cell with a kickass data plan is all you really need. Let it play hot spot at home. I hear tell they actually still beam a free TV signal through the air. You could actually use that for some TV.

What does an unlimited data plan cost these days? How much to add a second limited data phone? I suspect it is less than the typical cable/phone/data bundle.

There may be a couple others here that remember when there were zero channels of TV to choose from. Then there were two or three when NBC, CBS, and then ABC got started up. When I lived in Grand Gorge NY, a small village in a valley in the northern Catskills we could not get TV even with rabbit ears. Local appliance dealer put an antenna on top of one of the hills, ran cables down to the town and charged folks $5 a month for the service. We got the 3 stations out of Albany-Schenectady with that. I don't recall having a night that didn't have an entertaining program on at least one of the channels. Then again we were happy to get Gunsmoke et al.

Hell, when I was a kid, you had the big 3 with the best viewing on the weekends.

Saturday morning toons and Sunday evening Disney rocked. I always watched in shock that skier come tumbling down the ski jump in the intro to ABC Wide World of Sports. Later, after the intro to cable, NOTHING topped Saturday morning wrassling!

We had the big three, PBS and 1 or 2 small independent stations. My gramps had a roof antenna and lived on a big ass hill, so he could get the stations from Providence pretty well and the NYC channels, but barely. Used to love watching the old black and white horror movies on "creature feature" from one of the NYC independents. I think it was channel 5.

Rack Saturday mornings with the WWF. Funniest shit ever. "Mean Gene"Okerlund talking on the phone with someone making plans to go quail hunting with Ted Kennedy. Found that Ted backed out when he learned they had to cross a bridge to get there. Great writing for the rasslers too, especially the Lovely Miss Elizabeth---WOWIE.

I'm not ready to go cell only. I have data through my local cable company. It is 54 a month unlimited and it is good enough that my wife can stream a movie while I am broadcasting on shoutcast and there isn't a skip. It is also handy as a backup plan for my work at home data plan.

My wife and I are actually cutting back on our cell data plan for the time being. We discovered that we've never used more than 2 Gb/month of data as when we're home our phones are on the home wireless network anyway. So we're cutting back from unlimited to a 2Gb/month plan. Total savings between that and ditching satellite come to about $120 a month. All for getting rid of things we were never really using. We're using a roku box for netflix and Amazon prime. The wife once talked about also adding hulu plus. But I'm waiting to see if she'll insist or let it pass. Me I could care less. But if an extra 9 dollars a month gives me peace...

I should do the same. There really isn't much on cable that I would miss and a good bit of that can be had over the interwebs.

I'd take hulu plus over Amazon prime. We just use Amazon for occasional on demand stuff. Their prime selection is pretty limited.

It is weaker. But the free two day shipping was what lured me in. Screw pay on demand. I made up a password for pay on demand and deliberately forgot it so that the temptation isn't there. There is also Crackle if all else fails. Yea, they have ads. But their selection is starting to get better and there is no monthly fee.

We've used Amazon to buy full season HD access to a bunch of series that we "needed" to catch up on. It works very well on our Logitech box.

Deadwood
The Wire
Justified
Breaking Bad
