(!) Sign at the local car wash (!)

With us finally getting a break in the weather, I decided to take the fleet for a good spring cleaning. This has been a really shitty spring thus far, with 3 snow storms in about 40 days.
The quick drive through car wash only does enough to keep the rig semi-respectable. You have put in some elbow grease to get back to a good shine. As I roll up the car wash, I pull the
first car in a bay, and I see this sign on the wall.

Image

Now mind you, we have a bucket filled with warm soapy water, 2 sponges, and a brush, ready to do some hard core scrubbing, after I make a couple of trips around the car
with the wash wand of high pressure soap. PISSED, I pull out of the bay, and slowly drive down the line. Every fucking bay has this ridiculous sign hanging on the wall. I finally pull into the
last bay, furthest from the managers office, and proceed with a full scrubbing spending 4 bucks. Not a chance in hell, am I about to go NASCAR and make 500 laps around my car
wasting a buck a minute to try in futility at washing off dirt that just wont wash off. Also, not a chance in hell am I about to use their brush on the end of the hose that's loaded up with dirt and shit that will
scratch and fuck up the clear coat.

This car wash is only 1/2 mile from the house and by far the nicer of the only 2 in town. I decided I wasn't going to play the game with the other cars, and took them to the other car wash that is 3 miles away. Fuck'em and their sign. No sign in wash #2. Later last night, on a trip into the city, I cruised though one of the larger and most popular car washes in town. No signs hanging there either. Is this a one of a kind thing? Have you ever spotted this sign in your car wash?

Negative on ever seeing that sign. I have also never seen a managers office at one of those self serve places either.

These days I use the local full service wash place. $225 per year gets me unlimited wash, vac and towel dry. Plus I get to go to the front of the line as well. There are higher and lower priced packages as well if you just want a wash or if you want to add armor all to the inside and wax once a month, etc.

I highly suggest this route and avoid the spray gun or cheap gas station car wash.

It's funny,

When I am looking for a location that allows me to hand wash my car with my own hands, home would be my top 438 options.

What jack said.

Stop being the screwey of the car owning population.

Take a walk around your pad. Look on the exterior wall, there should be a metal thing with a knob on it sticking out. It's called a water spigot. You put a hose on it and wash your car with it. And it doesn't cost a buck a minute.

A 5 gallon bucket, extended wash brush, hand mitt, a gallon of Turtle Wax, hose, 20 minutes and one beer, some tunes on the stereo. Mission accomplished with out any scratch's or broken antennas.

I had all white vehicles for my sports turf business, and sometimes you ended up washing each vehicle 3 times a week.

Unless of course the local cheer leading squad is having a benefit car wash at the auto parts store.

most car washes have those signs for a simple reason... so you don't get stuck waiting in line for 30 minutes while some dickhead who calls his car a "rig" hand washes his piece of shit "sled".

No surprise you don't get that rather obvious reason.

Don't get me wrong. If you want to keep border jumpers employed pay the pros to get the job done, be my guest. I'll get the works done once or twice a year and end result is better than my best efforts.

But leaving your house to drive to a location and plunking down cash for the privilege of scrubbing your car yourself is just restaurant quality stupid.

Maybe it's because car washes are meant for washing cars.

Did you not used to drive a Saturn, or Pontiac or some other similar vehicle?

Have a Saturn. Never owned a Pontiac, but mom had a 69 catalina wagon. Got first piece in that barge and no, mom wasn't involved.

This is a pretty large joint. Pretty much the Walmart of car washes. 12-15 bays, 2 drive thru bays, and bunch of vending machines selling all kinds of over priced
crap for you rig. (Just for you wags, you fucking prick. Now get back in your barrel.) I live in a small town of about 10k people. 20 years ago we have 4 car washes
and another half dozen gas stations that offered a car wash and a vacuum. Those are long gone now. The managers office always has some old grouchy fucker that gives you
change if you need it, or as a buddy of mine told me earlier today, will come out and bitch at him if he leaves mud in the bay after washing his trucks or dirt bikes.
Left Seater wrote:These days I use the local full service wash place. $225 per year gets me unlimited wash, vac and towel dry.
I have never heard of this. Kind of an interesting gimmick. Does it apply to one person, one vehicle, or is multiple? One would be a ripoff for me, but we have 6 cars
in the family. If they would allow multiple cars that would be a steal.
R-Jack wrote:It's funny, When I am looking for a location that allows me to hand wash my car with my own hands, home would be my top 438 options.
Not sure where you live, but most folks around here take their car to the car wash. Once or twice a year, I drag out the pressure washer, hose down the house, and then all the cars. But its more of a
pain in the ass and takes longer. Plus its mine is only 1800 psi, and I'm pretty sure most of the pro's are pushing 2500-2700.

You're not supposed to wash your car in the driveway, because the soap gets in the storm drainage system and runs to the nearest river or ocean and kills all the manatees and snail darters.

Insensitive prick. :x

Manatees? Dude lives in KC. That would have to be one kickass storm drainage system.

Which is an excellent way to remove paint from a car.

Or so I've heard.

That must be why I've never seen a manatee or snail darter in Iowa.

btw The 20th Century just arrived in Utah. Women can lead prayers and wear pants in mormon church now. Nice.
One thing I think the Mormons keep on the QT is their arms. They are the best prepared people in the world. I hear them run a net on ham radio every Sunday night and they turn up about 60 check ins over a 150 mile area. They never talk about guns or anything, but I think they probably got some serious weapons going on. Have to to hang on to your shit if shit goes sideways.

Nosing around in the backwoods of southern Oregon, Derron uncovers evidence of yet another nefarious government conspiracy that will undoubtedly lead to major shit going down...

Image

Knowing his duty as an arms-bearing U.S. citizen, our Fearless Hero takes to the airwaves to get the message out to all and sundy like-minded patriots...

Image

Jizzing his camo Underoos at the sight of the first government missile screaming his way, he rejoices like a certain retired parole officer in Iowa who just received his gilded RSVP to the semi-annual Tri-Cities "Beanball Safety" Pee Wee League coaching clinic at the local Elks Lodge...

Dave,

It is by the car, but there are discounts for each additional car in the family. For our three it is just over $400 per year. Just went there yesterday and was in and out in 7 minutes. The wife and I usually average 5 trips per month each and the third vehicle goes monthly. So for roughly 130 trips per year we pay $3.25 per trip on something that retails for over $20.

Really hard to beat no matter how you slice it.

Why? Look no further than the EPA. Since they are monitoring storm water quality many cities have ordinances that require zero runoff of wash water. If you are going to wash your car at home in these places you usually have to contain the waste water in your grass or on some sort of gravel bed. Any waste water that hits the storm drain is the potential for a fine.

MS4 permits are now required (since 1999) for any public storm sewer system that discharges to US waters. IE every system in the US.

I imagine it's important to keep the rig clean after all that snow and ice shit you flyover folks deal with. The sled needs to look sharp during rain and hail season let alone when a tornado picks it up and drops it in a neighbors living room.

You do know about these things called a garage right? Keeps the rain, hail, sun etc off of the vehicle.

One thing I never understood was why so many East Coast houses, apt, condos, etc didn't have them. It always sucked to have to go out and dig the SUV out of the overnight snow. Ten times worse if it was more of an ice event.

And when you're parked at work for 8-10 hours? Commuting/traveling on sludgy roads? Stuck behind a semi on the highway kicking salt and snow all over your car?

Right. You seemed to suggest that merely keeping your car in your garage will keep it clean...except nobody is home 24 hours a day. Well, except for Spray.

Yeah it really sucks the the nanny state is would do anything to protect water quality.

Cleveland, for example, was a much more exciting place when there was a chance the river might catch on fire.

No I am not, but the EPA will be soon enough. They continue to tighten the rules regarding impervious cover. As the new standards are phased in many places are going to have to move to parking structures to comply. We are already seeing it with new grocery stores here in Texas.

Nope, it seems you misread my response to Y2K. Yes a garage does help protect a vehicle from rain, hail and tornadoes. Granted if you drive it it will get dirty at some point and hence the car wash membership.

That's fine and dandy (if it happens), but how was I suppose to gather all that from this:
You do know about these things called a garage right? Keeps the rain, hail, sun etc off of the vehicle.
That's what I responded to. Having a garage at home is nice, but very few work-goers have access to covered parking and that's unlikely to change anytime soon.
